I do know there are at least 4 women on this site: GoddessMaria, Ji-Chan (I know both of them very well so I know what I'm saying), RachelB and myself.
Oh my God, seriously? This post is eye-opening. We definitely need the feature.

And this right here is why arguments and problems start. You always go out of your way to start them.
I’m not sure what you mean. I was simply expressing disbelief at the new information that I was given. I didn’t know, so I was surprised, and I would’ve known if we had the feature, so it would be good to have.

On a more serious note, how has our policy changed since these two threads? Neither thread got very far before the conversation and sentiment turned to, "Oh my goodness, who the hell cares?" I mean, I was curious until I read those threads and then I realized, hey, why on Earth do I care?
I will defer to the wishes of our female members since they would be most affected by the policy, but if it were my choice, I would advise not allowing/requiring users to declare their gender. Let's just be all-inclusive and keep the preferred shape of our sex organs off the table, mmmkay?
(Wishful thinking on my part.)
What are you trying to imply?
I don’t see any policy in either of the threads you linked, just flame in one of them and nothingness in the other.
You're expressing disbelief at... what exactly? That we have as many as four women? That we have so few? And because of this we need the feature... why?
Actually, let's dwell on that last point. What problem does revealing one's gender solve here? I'm really struggling to come up with a good reason.

HAVING to declare your gender is silly and I don't think I've came across any forum that does so (they either have the Blank option or you can hide it). Facebook (which isn't a forum) kind of does it, you can hide the gender itself but it still uses the gendered pronoun, which is silly, and you have to make a custom gender to make it refer to you as "they/them" (which even gets silly translation to non-english languages). It can be a right, but not an obligation.
I myself would be okay with the way it currently is since I myself don't seen this as much of a deal, that was the first time I've seen such an exaggerated reaction for a gender confusion (I've told this to synnchan already, she already apologized to the community so it's okay). But [blank]/male/female/other selectable box should be enough of a simple fix for those who WANT show off their gender to prevent confusion, and for didn't want to use their signature for that. So if my post makes any difference on the decision, I go for having the option.
@the arguments above: It this really necessary? This is an apology topic and and maximum we're trying to decide the course of action. ಠ_ಠ

Those two threads are the perfect answer to "Why aren't there more female TASers?" There most likely are, they're just choosing not to mention their gender because shit like that happens. "There are no women on the internet" on the first page of both threads. God.
Is it really that hard to treat everyone equally? This is a site for talking about emulation and speedrunning. Gender shouldn't matter.

It should matter, in a way by considering on who are we talking to. I mean that you could take consideration on whatever gender you are and answer their responses in the correct way just to not mess up like this again. I'm just talking about respect and learn how to talk to people that are your opposite gender, that's my opinion, I have no idea about yours.

I don't really understand what you are referring to. How are those two threads "perfect answers to why there aren't more female TASers"?
And "there are no women on the internet" is a meme. It's humor.

I haven't seen much unequal treatment on this site. Can you point actual examples? (Because an accusation of unequal treatment of people is kind of serious and shouldn't be thrown lightly.)

^^I haven't seen actual examples on the site of unequal treatment, that was just a general statement. I just wasn't too happy with the threads due to those "NO WOMEN ON THE INTERNET" statements. I've never liked that "joke" and it just feeds into everyone assuming everyone else is male.
It's just a personal thing, in short.
I take gender somewhat seriously, having gone through issues with it myself while growing up, and overall I just think there shouldn't be any difference between how you treat anyone. If someone says they're female, then it should just be like "Okay cool, now how did you find that sweet glitch in Banjo-Kazooie?" Most girls I've talk to don't want to be put on pedestals or treated kindly just because they're girls, especially the ones involved in the gaming community.
Let me rephrase what I said: It's not that gender shouldn't matter, it's that we should just accept it and move on.

Clearly, Vault tier and gender are related and it's impossible for me to have different opinions regarding both. My inability to accept something I perceive to be broken and negative means it is impossible for me to accept that certain people may be certain genders. It is a burden I must carry with me for the rest of my life.

I completely agree. I wasn't pointing to those threads as filled to the brim with ideal behavior from males on the site, but rather that the overall sentiment was, "Who cares?" I don't see how the problems with those threads are diminished by flagging female users, even voluntarily. I can only imagine problems being amplified.

Eh. It's pretty lame humor. And who hasn't heard it before? I think it got a chuckle out of me when I was in my mid-teens over a decade ago. I can easily imagine how annoying it would be to read for the fiftieth time after revealing my gender and wanting to be taken seriously. It adds nothing to the conversation and no one is going to jump in to say, "Lol! That's so clever! What a witty joke!"

I can't be the sole person to point out the inequality on the site, but I think it could easily be argued that two (now three) threads focusing on finding female TASers as well as one brief instance of assuming that a female TASer was male (granted that Gamer Maiden Sonia's response was a little overboard, but that's not the point) qualify as a few instances of male posters naively saying, "Wow! Girls are different!"
Now, I don't think this is being done maliciously and if it were directed at me, I'd try to shrug it off as a mild annoyance at worst, but that's not really what you're asking. I think the point is that women on the site are not treated with the same basic respect and standards as men. I mean, suppose you're really interested in, say, cosmetics and you go to a forum to express your interests. You lurk for a few months and then all of a sudden you see a thread that says, "Any men here?" Maybe some women leap in to your defense, but the overall sentiment seems to be, "What's the deal with men liking cosmetics? That's a lady thing!" Wouldn't you find that off-putting? Maybe not, but I at least see how it could be bothersome when you're just trying to fit in.

Do you not know how to read?

Take pity on me, as it is shameful that I have two differing opinions on two different topics. The pain I suffer through on a daily basis is enough, I do not need more on top of that. Woe is me, for I battled gender dysphoria for years of my life and thus I have strong opinions about gender equality, and simultaneously I am cursed to be unable to accept a minor part of a fucking website.

That's not the point. The point is that Samsara made some accusations about unequal treatment and how those threads "are the perfect answer to why there aren't more female TASers". I don't think the insinuation was that the reason is that people repeat lame internet memes.
Samsara takes gender issues seriously, and so do I. Don't think such accusations should be thrown lightly, because they are pretty serious. "It's pretty lame humor" does not warrant throwing such accusations.

Two threads out of how many thousands? And even those threads don't show any kind of unequal treatment that I can see (but please point out specifics if you disagree).

How does mentioning something that many people consider unusual mean unequal treatment?
Previously in this thread I wrote about how I always assume by default that anonymous people on the internet are male. Would you accuse me of "unequal treatment" for writing that?

It happens often enough and everywhere enough that it turns from just "lame humor" into what I consider to be a serious issue. The internet has this weird obsession with completely discrediting females: Girls who reveal their gender on other sites are usually met with "lol nope you're just pretending to be a girl", some people go as far as to call any girl who reveals her gender an attention whore (which was brought up by synnchan/Sonia in the grue'd thread), there are all these really terrifying instances of men going way too far with it if you look in the right places. This place just so happens to be relatively free of all that horrid misogyny and I'd like to see it kept that way.
I apologize if what I said was taken as an accusation towards anyone on the site or in the community, though I still stand by my comment that the "lame humor" is quite discouraging for women who may want to address and be proud of their gender. My point was that there are probably a lot more girls here, but general male behavior keeps them silent about who they are.

Everyone does that. It's just an assumption, it's not like you're disagreeing with them if they state their real gender. I think it's partially an issue of how people perceive what is written and partially an issue of the internet itself being generally male-focused, with gaming culture in particular being especially male-focused.
There was an offhand statement in one of those threads about a user being perceived as female because of their effeminate manner of speaking on the forums, and that got me thinking... That might be the main reason why people assume people are one gender or the other. It's happened to me on multiple occasions that whenever I'm expressing my happiness, or just generally typing excitedly and showing emotion, I'm generally referred to as female. When I'm more reserved and passive (or angry), I'm generally referred to as male. For the most part, all the posts on the forums are passive and "emotionless", thus the general assumption that everyone here is male.
