Post subject: An expression of apology

Well... as many of you may know, yesterday there was an argument between me and some members about gender confusion, and I have to admit I sounded really mad without necessity while I could simply correct them politely. The main problem is with my personality. I happen to have a quite short temper plus impulsiveness which gets me in trouble sometimes. I do admit that I should do something about this issue and try to control my impulses more in order to prevent the occurrence of more unpleasant cases like this. So, I'd like to truly apologize towards the community for the storm I caused. If I offended anyone, then I want to say I'm sorry for that as well. I think that's it. I just want to clean the bad image and make sure nobody will think negatively of me now. I hope everyone will accept my sincere apologizes. (Sorry if this ended up really short, but I'm just not the best at this kind of thing...)

That's quite alright, every guy here I'm sure gets mad from time to time. Just relax, have fun, and carry on.

I wasn't part of the conversation in question, but that's very admirable to offer an apology, if you ask me. Like Nach stated, it's all good :)

Really, Nach? :) (As an aside, this is always a complex issue as the typical in-person cues are flat-out missing and I go out of my way to avoid making gender assumptions online because of it.)

Yes, really. I try to add some subtle humor to my posts whenever possible.

Yes, that's very hard when dealing with texts more so then in-person speech. But here on the World Wide Web, we're lucky, because everyone knows that women don't exist here, so we can keep writing simple and male-oriented.

Maybe something good could come out of the whole ordeal if we add gender to the profile options like many other forums have?

You guys. :P But yeah, it's kinda normal for gender confusions to happen. Thankfully, there's always a way to sort everything out. 。◕‿◕。

That would probably be helpful.

I can do that if there's enough demand. What should the options be? 1) Male 2) Female (no really!) 3) Other Is that good (without the joke of course)?

It'd help more if it was displayed on the user's posts, near the post count/location and all that. I don't think too many people go around checking profiles to find out what gender everyone is, especially in a predominantly male community. Male/Female/Other works fine.

Before we go too much further with this we should probably do a poll. :)

An option where the user can enter a rotation angle and length, and it generates an icon somewhere between and that changes color (rotation=hue, saturation=length) accordingly?

This site definetly needs this feature. I mean, as a dude myself, I want to see if the person is a male or a female, that way I can be more respectful and kind to females and more childish and trollish to guys. P Also, does this have a discussion for the General/Sites Forum? That could be a good idea if you ask me.

But fails to cover: Lets not be discriminating now against people who are born different.

Honestly, just Male/Female covers pretty much everything (transmen and transwomen identify as specifically male or female and don't like being referred to as trans), and Other/I'm Not Sure are good alternate options that cover the rest of the spectrum without being discriminatory. More specific gender options can be added if anyone asks for them.

I don't know if I want or don't want to know what originated this thread... :P Seriously, though, I have noticed that I always assume that an anonymous person on the internet is male, basically without fail. It kind of always surprises me when someone (especially a regular) turns out to be female. I'm not exactly sure why. I shouldn't make such an assumption and I shouldn't be surprised, but that's just how it goes. Why do I assume that? It's strange, when I think about it.

Because statistics? Certain subjects (in this case, TASing) tend to get a lot more attention from one gender than from the other (in this case, men). It's like playing the lotto: sure you might win, but it's reasonable to assume you don't.

You know these kinds of lists are very insulting to those born outside of the common two genders, right?

I do know there are at least 4 women on this site: GoddessMaria, Ji-Chan (I know both of them very well so I know what I'm saying), RachelB and myself. But... I have to agree we're still the minority.
