Cheers! Thanks so much for making this demo. edit: Back to stuff that actually matters for a TAS, in Water Secret did you consider spitting the shell out and catching it in mid-air rather than taking that pit stop on the cloud? It's a pity that there are so many Yoshi tricks in these games yet almost none are time-efficient. -hanzou

If Yoshi spits the shell out in mid-air, it doesn't drop peacefully, it flies off the screen, even if holding downward, thus I had to land. You can, however, take a vine there and climb it alllllllllll the way up to the top! The vine sprouts around the same speed as Yoshi's flight anyway, so it's not really a timesaver, but it's neat that the vine just climbs all the way up (it even eats through the clouds).

JXQ, holding down doesn't make a difference. In order to spit the shell and catch it in the air, release the B button a split second before you spit the shell and it isn't too hard to time it so that Yoshi can catch it immediately after losing a bit of altitude. Just make sure you're holding left or right as well so you won't lose the shell in the horizontal direction. I tested and this is faster than the pit stop taken in your published movie. I don't know if the vine would be faster though. edit: Hey guess what? I think I found an actual timesaver with the Yoshi flight trick! First off, there's a much easier way to execute the trick than the other five methods. Simply fly up against a ceiling and press the A button to bounce off and on Yoshi in an instant. As for the actual TAS timesaver, in Pipe World 5, you have an annoying delay where Mario and red Yoshi must wait for those alternating piranha plants, right? Well, when Yoshi is flying he also has the property that if he hits an enemy (even these special plants that can kill Mario while he's riding Yoshi) he will just flicker and become invincible for a short period. If you run and stealthily exploit this a few times under those pipes you ought to be able to get past that part with much less delay, if you can pull it off! edit: Check this out. Another Yoshi trick that could save time in special situations: This first screenshot shows an alternate faster path (at the cost of losing the message block) but it isn't a Yoshi trick since Mario could do it alone. It's faster because with Mario already in the block he'll have to backtrack less after he picks up the key around the corner. (Ignore the numbers on the timers since I clearly didn't take these screenshots from a sequential movie.) However, at the next corner Yoshi can save Mario the couple seconds it takes to swim around to under the key. On top of that, Yoshi retains Mario's swim-with-an-item power so he can come along to the end of the level. In this particular instance this Yoshi trick doesn't save that much time, if any, but these sorts of tricks are something to consider. -hanzou

A use for the message block in Water World? Interesting...how does it work? Does Mario swim under the message block, through the wall? I can't tell from the picture. Could this still possibly save time without Yoshi? Not that it would matter, because Yoshi could just be kept from Water Secret. And the PW5b idea would definitely save some time if it works. Maybe you could make some SMVs with some of these cool tricks :)

Yeah the first screenshot doesn't demonstrate a Yoshi trick, since it works with Mario alone. I'm not sure exactly why it works but the method seems to be to swim at the message block, press down to crouch at the right time, then release down at the right time. Here is an .smv for just the message block thing. As for tough maneuvers like flying in the narrow passageway of Pipe World 5, I'll have to leave those up to you experts. =) -hanzou

I'm still bummed I didn't get to be a part of this, but you guys worked together just fine. I guess I'll just stick to being an almost-have-been. =P

I'll attempt it in December. For now, I have no time for such trifling matters.
It's almost December if you still wanted to do a run :) If not, perhaps you'd want to improve the 15-exit run? It's definitely improvable by at least 5 seconds. EDIT: Did this demo for fun, it's about 2 seconds faster. Probably could hit 3 seconds if fully optimized. I also thought about WW4 with the message block a bit more, and I don't know if it would save time or not, because extra swimming backtracking is needed to place the block in the correct spot. There is less backtracking, but it is done without item in hand, so it may actually take longer. Didn't test though.

Awesome! I'm glad you could pull that off and it's great to see that the Yoshi flight trick actually does have a use in one of these runs.

Well there is another option although it costs about half a second: Press R! -hanzou

It's difficult to describe a TAS that's so well done. Is there a way to re-enter a star world once you've found its key?

No. That's why Boo's Star Road is so evil when you get there the first time.

Then is there a way to get to Bowser's back door without the Star World?

Erm, it broke. It's not a problem here, it's a problem at Super Mario World Central - an ass by the name of ArBeWhat deleted all the hacks off the database, after hacking into an admin account, and we're working on re-uploading them. Change the link, please?

No, this is the broken link. The one I posted above is the correct one. Check the movies for Demo World. =\

Thank you for pointing that out, the link has been fixed and once again points to FuSoYa's (restored) homepage.

So I came out of "retirement" and finished my Super Demo World - The Legend Continues "120-exit" TAS yesterday. The problem is that I did this on SNES9X v1.43 which is not accepted on TASVideos unless a continuance is granted. The reason why I stuck with SNES9X instead of LSNES is because I started this run on August 28, 2011 and finished half of it before SNES9X v1.43 was no longer accepted. Is there anyway I can get this movie to be an exception?

Any reason why you didn't ask for a continuance back in 2012? Do you have compelling evidence to suggest that this run was half way completed well before the Snes9x v1.43 cut off date?

Any chance it resyncs on snes9x 1.5x? Or does the lag differences change it too much?

I can vouch for him. Panga disappeared off the internet a long time ago. There's no way he could've known about Snes9x being discontinued.

This post would seem to contradict that. This post suggests ~3 worlds were completed a few months before the cut off. Edit: Just to clarify my opinion, if Panga only visited us once or twice during the period, it's possible he missed the announcement. It's also possible no one else told him. ~3 worlds being complete a few months before the cut off makes it likely that a good chunk of the game was completed by the cut off period. I'm leaning on trusting Panga and accepting this, but I'd like to hear it from him first.
