As I understand it, the platform genre is a subset of the action genre. However, we have some movies that are only tagged with "Genre: Platform" and other movies that are tagged with both "Genre: Action" and "Genre: Platform". Which case is correct? Should all movies having the Platform tag be given an Action tag as well, or should all movies tagged as both have their Action tag removed?

A platform game is a video game which involves guiding an avatar to jump between suspended platforms, over obstacles, or both to advance the game. The action game is a video game genre that emphasizes physical challenges, including hand–eye coordination and reaction-time. The genre includes diverse subgenres such as fighting games, shooter games, and platform games, which are widely considered the most important action games, though some real-time strategy games are also considered to be action games. In Wikipedia we trust.

So every game tagged as a Platform game should be tagged with "Genre: Action" as well?

I don't think because its a platformer it should be tagged "Action". Some games like that Ivy the Kiwi are puzzle platformers where despite having some action, it's mostly focused on puzzles.

Just think of it as this. Castlevania is a Platform Game because of all the jumping and stuff you do it is also and Action Game because of the amount of violence usually within the game. Mario is a Platform Game but given and E rating it cannot be an Action Game. That's my theory anyway.

Why would you think rated "E" makes it unable to be an Action game? Just because it has violence, it doesn't mean it's a gore fest. Heck, Mario games have cartoon violence in the form of stomping enemies/burning/smashing/etc.

I think I see the difference. Mega Man is like a platform game, but shooting with the Mega Buster is an important part of gameplay, which makes it an action game too. Whereas with Mario, it's the platforming aspect that's emphasized, so it's just a platform game. Does that sound right?

I think that is the best explanation I've heard regarding the proper use of those two tags.

Wow, thanks! I'll edit the Movie Class Guidelines page to make the distinction clearer. EDIT: Done.
