Hi ! I am new on this forum and i am french so sorry if my english is not correct ! The G.G. Shinobi II: The Silent Fury !! This game was my favorite on the game gear console (the first opus : G.G Shinobi was very good too ! ). I played it a lot in my childhood, and i loose so many times in the last level, the "Ennemy's base" ;). This game was very cool for the game gear. I played it a few month ago, and i realised that it was not so difficult ! I am surprised not to see any tool-assisted-speedrun of this awesome game ;) . I would like to make it but i will need help because i have never done any TASpeedrun before. I learn how to use the Dega emulator (Dega 1.16), and i have the Shinobi II - The Silent Fury (U) [!] file. I have made some speedruns of the game to find the better way. It seems there is no RAM Watch for the Game Gear Emulator, am i rigth ? If it doesn't exist, should i try to make one without it ?

Here is the better way i find, for now ;) : First level : Building Going to the boss room as fast as possible, taking a ninjutsu on the way, spending some frames to destroy a crate near to the boss room in order to use the red ninjutsu later in the game. Killing the boss. Yellow ninja unlocked. Second level : Canyon Using the yellow ninja in order to go to the cristal room. Taking the ninjutsu in the back and left of this room. Taking the blue cristal. Going as fast as possible to the boss room. Killing the boss. Blue ninja unlocked. Third level : Castle Using the yellow ninja in order to go to the cristal room. Using a blue ninjutsu to take the pink cristal. Going as fast as possible to the boss room. Killing the boss. Pink ninja unlocked. Fourth level : Building Using the blue ninja in order to go to the cristal room. Taking a ninjutsu on the way, in the yellow cristal room. Take the yellow cristal as fast as possible. Once the yellow cristal taken, using a red ninjutsu to go to the boss room. Fifth level : Factory Taking the ninjutsu in the up and right of the "dark room". Using two ninjutsu to skip a good part of the level, in order to go to the cristal room faster. Using the pink ninja to go to the dark cristal room. Taking the green cristal. Going down and go to the boss room as fast as possible. Killing the boss. Green ninja unlocked. Sixth level : Ennemy's base A room - B room - C room : Take the bottom door - E room - G room : Take the upper door and beat the boss - M room, using only one blue ninjutsu - Q room : Take the upper door - G room and beat the boss - O room - Q room : Take the bottom room - room S : Using a yellow ninjutsu to save time ; Taking the right door - T room - U room : beating the ennemy's ninja one by one then beating the last boss. If you have any ideas to go faster, don't hesitate ;) ! Before i begin the optimisation work :). If you have tips or advices, it would be great too.

Here is a .mmv file to let you see an overview of the levels's order and how levels are done. This is not optimize at all, it is just to let you see if there are others better ways possible, and to see an overview of what it would look like. I have not specified, it would be a "no damage" TASpeedrun, because i think it is prettier to see for this game. The way to go I know there are lots of optimizations to do, the aim of this file is just to know if this is the good way to make the game the fastest as possible. (Oups, it seems that my file start from a save state ! I will try to change that for the next one)

I have done the first step of the TASpeedrun, the building level, here is the movie file : First step - Building level done Outch, start from a save state again ! i have to work on how to start from reset ! maybe i can do something with the HxD editor. Here is how i have proceded : I start the frame per frame mode, i click on reset, and i then start recording. Is someone can help me to get a start from reset ? Because i don't know how to proceed ! I try many ways but i always have : Start from a save state ! (I don't have a "Start recording from reset" option in Dega 1.16)

Hum, i find something interesting for my problem of "Start from a save state" ; with the Dega emulator, the first input in the controller data format of the movie files (.mmv) should start at 00F4, but in all my movie files, the first input always start at 62F4, and i try to just copy and paste at 00F4 but the movie can't be played after that. Please help !

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1897877104/shinobi2.mmv This seems to sync and start from reset. I changed the file by setting "starts from reset" flag and clearing savestate offset.

I see in another topic that it was possible to have a ram watch with Dega 1.16. I installed Python program and... it works ! But i don't find essential values in the RAM, for now.

Thanks for Ilari, I managed to quickly look through your WIP. It looked optimized and the game looks farily decent for being an oldschool game. Keep it up :)

I have realised that i can gain lot of frames in boss rooms by putting the shinoby in a better place after the boss's defeat, i gain 40 frames just in the first boss room !! I try to change this with hex-editing, but i always have a desynchronisation !! I can't believe i haven't seen it before ! I spend much time trying to solve this problem of desynchronisation, and I think now that the best way is to remake step 2 and step 3 ! Ram adresses to optimise boss room : C0F0 : Information about horizontal position of the shinoby (C14F : Information about horizontal position of the shinoby) The best position of the shinoby change, and i don't know why ! The better position is always near to C0F0=54 (Just a note : The Controller data begin at the 62F2 adress)

I realised that i can gain some frames by doing the factory level before building level. So, i have changed a little my level's order. G.G. Shinobi II :The Silent Fury episode 4, here is the file : Step four - Factory done If you have advices or suggestions, don't hesitate

Do you know it ? You can force this type of ennemy to be in a wrong place ! ;) There are items hidden in water. A shinobi don't need to breathe but can't swim ! ;) You think you can't pass ? Free your mind ! ;) There are items hidden on the top of the castle, they appears only if you kill four specific ennemies ! ;) There are items on the left and on the right of the castle, find them by using a blue ninjutsu ! ;)

Hey, G.G. Shinobi II :The Silent Fury episode 5, return to the building ;) Step five - Return to the building Comment : I can avoid the last green ennemy before the elevator but it seems impossible to avoid the others, and i don't know why because the first green ennemy start from a same height. I try a lot to avoid the others in the same way, but i fail to do it. If someone manage to do it please tell me. Enjoy If you have advices or suggestions, don't hesitate

You can't get everything required from the building in one pass? Not even altering the order you do levels (in case getting the needed stuff needs some unlocking)? Or you could, but not having some stuff in other level would be massive time loss?

No, we can't get any cristal in the first level, so we must have to do at least one level two times. In Castle level, we need - yellow and blue shinobi and a ninjutu or - green shinobi or - the blue shinobi and 3 ninjutsu to get the cristal. In Building level, we need the blue shinobi to get the cristal. In Canyon level, we need - the yellow shinobi or - the blue shinobi and a ninjutsu to get the cristal In Factory level, we need the pink shinobi to get the cristal We can't get any cristal with just the red shinobi. I think a lot about what is the best levels order before beginning this TAS, and i hope i have the good one ! Your comment is very good because it pointed out a very hard point of this TAS : Is it the best levels order ? I hope i have choosen the best, but it is very hard to be sure. It is like a very big puzzle ! ;)

Yeah, i was able to skip the attack phase of the boss, it gains 66 frames. Then i have a desynchronisation !! But, i succeed in synchronise the file !!! ;) hours of work saved, what a relief ! Here is the file : Step five - version 2 - Return to the building But i have discovered another thing, i think the Canyon Boss can be beaten faster ! Another work before the Enemy's base ! ;) Enjoy

Yeah, i beat the Canyon Boss really faster ! A huge improvement ! What a mistake not to see it before ! Then i have a desynchronisation again !! This time i really thought that i wouldn't be able to synchronise the file, but, after a lot of adjustments, it finally works ! An improvement of 668 frames !! Here is the file : Step five - Return to the building - version 3 But, i have changed few frames to synchronise the file and i am afraid that i have lost few frames in this operation. I try to synchronise it without changing anything but, for now, it always desynchronise ! ;(

Ok ok ! I synchronise the file cleanly, i have to made some modifications to do it, few optimisations have been made too, and i have saved 39 frames from the previous file. Step six - Before Enemy's Base What a hard work, hope my TAS will be accepted ! ;) Next step : The beginning of the Enemy's Base :)
