Post subject: Dump SMS ROMs compatible with Gens?

I want to time attack some SMS games I own, but as far as I know there aren't any rerecording SMS emulators. I own a device that lets me plug SMS games into my Sega Genesis. I suppose if I hook an SMS ROM into that device and then dump the image from the device, it might produce a ROM I can use in Gens. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, can someone supply me with some links that have schematics and instructions for building a Genesis ROM dumper?

Funny you brought it up now! I wanted to time attack some Master System games and I tried this today!! The bad thing was that I thought Master System was the same as Mega Drive (bah) so it didn´t worked unfortunately. I tried to load this .sms file into the Gen-emulator but with no result. Of course this wasn´t that hard to figure out afterwards.. Ah well. If there ever will be a re-recordable emulator for Master System I got some games I will time attack.

Hmm... maybe there exists a program that converts SMS-Roms to Genesis? I mean, there are also converters for NES to GBA... Maybe I can find something in the net... Couldn't find any converters for that, that far. I found a Game Gear to Genesis converter : http://www.zophar.net/utilities/download/gg2md.zip , at least something...

Argh. I'll program a Master System emulator in the only programming "language" I sort of master then, HTML. Ah well. I hope it will be one working emu eventually.

The GG to MD converter doesn't work on any of the games I want to play.

There is a Gens mod called Gens+ wich plays SMS and GG games. I contacted the author to ask him if I could add movie support. He sent me the code and I added some GMV movie code. He rewrote almost all the movie code and redisigned the GMV movie file format (wich wasn't a bad idea. I thought about using his file format for future versions of Gens Movie). I asked him for some modifications including renaming the file format rerecording, version management and backward compatibility. He agreed to rename the movie file format to GIR but he disagreed about rerecording. Gens+ will be the base for the next official Gens. Wich means GIR is the official movie file format for Gens, without rerecording support. I still have the modified source of Gens+. Movie rerecording is only a matter of two additionnal lines of code. So I could: -Make a quick hack of Gens+ and to add movie rerecording to GIR. The problem is that there is no rerecord count Since the official version doesn't support rerecording, it could lead to a lot of confusion thinking rerecorded GIR are legetimates. -Add GMV support to Gens+ and releasing another unoffical version. Wich means lot and lot of work. Either way the official Gens community will probably dislike it. However, there is an emulator called SMS Plus with source avalaible. Blip ?

If you ask me it can be rather important to see the re-record count. It's also fun when you encounter those movies with loads of re-records. You will then know that the person made the movie has tried loads and loads of diffrent things to speed things up. Woulden't it be possible to implant re-record count to the GIR extension?

I don't control GIR format and the author is against rerecording. So I would have to do an unofficial GIR format.

I think most would find that acceptable. You could even further change the extension to avoid confusion. .grr maybe :P .

I've been searching for a way to convert sms roms to genesis roms. Is it possible? The program hosted on zophar domain doesn't run on windows 7, windows detects it as malware and deletes it. Any ideas?

Try using a VM to run it on an OS that is compatible with the program.

Maybe try disabling User Account Control/your antivirus or antimalware if you're confident you won't screw your computer up?
