Time Lord is what you might call a 2.5D platforming game (z direction is on a slight diagonal). It has a reasonably good engine, which is what attracted me to it. Unfortunately they managed to use a decent game engine to make a really crappy game. There is no blue police box, so we'll assume the main character is not The Doctor.

Game Objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.1.5
  • Genre: platform
  • Aims for fastest time.
  • Takes no dammage.

Comments

Most levels consist of collecting 5 orbs, the 5th is held by a boss enemy. The 6th level has the final boss, but no orbs.
This is actually a fairly difficult game because the enemies are fairly unforgiving in some places, and the method to get a few of the orbs is outright cryptic. I would be surprised if many players got past level 3 in real time without a turbo controller. The mexican cowboy boss on level 3 does have health that regenerates, but with no on screen indication most players probably gave up not knowing if they were even causing dammage.
It may look like using up and down (z direction) to go diagonally has an effect on speed, but if you watch the RAM values this turns out not to be the case. Moving diagonally only looks faster or slower because the z plane is rendered diagonally.
Enemy bosses do not have health bars shown on screen, and strangly the RAM values start at 1 and progress upward to 128.
This game engine does lend itself well to a TAS and in particular a no dammage run. The act of attacking essentially turns off hit detection for enemies and enemy projectiles. You'll notice quite a bit of jump kicking because attacking in air doesn't impact speed. It is particularly evident on the last run up to the boss when I'm getting constantly bombarded by following enemies.

Some Useful RAM values:

  • 0xC0 x minor
  • 0x484 x minor
  • 0x476 x velocity related
  • 0xC1 X major
  • 0x492 X major
  • 0x79 y minor
  • 0xC4 z minor
  • 0x60F Health
  • 0x6A Ground (Not very reliable for choosing when to jump)
  • 0x501 Enemy
  • 0x726 lvl 4 Orb (set when you are allowed to get the orb)
  • 0x4F7 Enemy
  • 0x723 Boss

Stage by stage comments

Stage 1:

Your mission - Capture 5 orbs in each time zone and eliminate alien forms changing earth's history. Good luck, time lord. Small level, orbs are fairly close together. This easy level luls you into a false sense of security.

Stage 2:

Position - Castle Harman. England. ETA - 1250 A.D.
  • Orb 1: Collect mushrooms.
  • Orb 2: Jump kick in the correct place to be launched towards the orb.
  • Orb 3: Go to the lower level then hop back up the pillars. (I have also seen this orb be floating above the landing above and you need to walk back and forth underneath it to get it)
  • Orb 4: The red flying monster drops it.
  • Orb 5: Stab the dragon.

Stage 3:

Position - Dead Man's Gulch. Western U.S.A. ETA - 1860 A.D.
  • Orb 1: Grab the pistol, then shoot the orb and it will launch you higher into the air.
  • Orb 2: There is a shotgun available before getting to this orb. The orb is hiding behind the station.
  • Orb 3: Shoot this orb repeatedly to freeze it in place while you collect it.
  • Orb 4: Jump kick in the correct place to be launched towards the orb.
  • Orb 5: Shoot the mexican cowboy. Note that his health does regenerate, so the faster you fire the better. The pistol fires more rapidly than the shotgun.

Stage 4:

Position - The Dora Marie. Caribbean. ETA - 1650 A.D.
  • Orb 1: Ring the bell 4 times, and collect the first 3 coins.
  • Orb 2: Jump kick to the right when falling back down into the area you just climbed up from.
  • Orb 3: You'll notice I skip this flashing orb earlier in the level. It turns out, cryptically, that you need to kill the one eel looking enemy near the throwing knives (needed for the boss).
  • Orb 4: I skipped this one earlier also. It will be flashing when you try to get it until you drop down from above.
  • Orb 5: Throw knives at the clam.

Stage 5:

Position - Front line trenches. France. ETA - 1943 A,D.
  • Orb 1: You need 6 kills before you can collect this one. Kill 6 and come back.
  • Orb 2: This orb turns into a projectile. collect it when it stops moving.
  • Orb 3: Collect packages to get the grenades. Throw them at the orb to move it to a collectable position.
  • Orb 4: Drop into the trench to collect the gas mask and reveal the orb. Drop in again to collect the orb.
  • Orb 5: Toss grenades at the machine gun soldier.

Stage 6:

Position - MB Time Travel Center. U.S.A. ETA - 2999 A.D. No orbs here, just the alien boss. If you collect the stuff from the robots along the way you can get a blaster gun and homing missles. These would be extra helpful in real time to keep the boss at a distance and home in on the heads when they start flying. In a TAS though it was easier to just keep jump kicking, the constant attacking keeps me from taking dammage.

Is the part with the mushrooms optimal? I know you can scroll them off, and they are considered collected.

Voting no because of strong lack of Matt Smith! Just kidding. I will watch it once there is an encode...

I didn't spend tons of time optimizing the mushrooms. I got it to where I don't have to do too much backtracking though, so I'd be surprised if you could save more than a few frames.

I played the Hell out of this game when I was kid. The mexican was absolutely annoying. I'm the only one I've known to have ever passed this game, since no one else made it past the pirate ship.

I had this game and like just about everyone else I couldn't beat the mexican boss. Until reading your submission text I didn't even know that regeneration was the issue. Abusing hit detection makes this interesting. I know that in the first two levels at least there seem to be five possible locations for orbs before the boss and the orbs will be placed randomly in four of them. Did you investigate that? It's been a while and forget the details though. Also, it might be all right to stop input before entering your name. There's no ending or credits afterwards. It's funny that Marble Madness was made by the same company and has a similar arcade-style high scoring system but you enter the name at the start instead of the end. I'll still vote yes because this looks like a pretty solid run.

I'm going with a "no" for game choice, though it borders on "meh". The sound for this game is annoying, the visuals aren't very aesthetically pleasing, the boss fights are pretty boring, and the levels aren't quite interesting enough to make up for it all. Nothing against the run, I'm just not crazy about the game's entertainment value.

I'm assuming you used TAS Edit, since the rerecord count is 0. I thought this was somewhat entertaining. I liked the music, and the technical quality seems good too (since not many people have even beaten this game). Some parts were pretty boring, but it held my attention. I'm going with Meh.

I had to vote meh. I think you did a good job. I just think the game is too slow-paced to really make for a fun-to-watch TAS.

Weak meh. It seems fairly well played, and I love the soundtrack, but it's just not that entertaining a game. Also, I was surprised and disappointed after viewing a demo of this game, as I wouldn't call this 2.5D like the submission states.

I enjoyed it, seems really interesting for an nes game, a platform puzzle game, even if the puzzle elements are really stupid

Personally, I enjoyed the run. I thought the game choice was passable, and most of the run was relatively entertaining. There were certain spots that really impressed me, though, where the play reached super human levels, particularly in the last level with the flying shooting alien robots. All around, it's not the best TAS on this site, but I think it deserves a place among the other countless crazy-difficult NES TAS's we have.

Nice going! I liked the look and feel of the game, actually, especially the tunes from the first few stages. I was also pretty surprised that Milton Bradley made this game. Some of the music made me think of things like Battletoads and Bionic Commando (especially the 1943 stage and the drumrolls in the music). This moved along quite well, and I vote Yes.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. There's a good reason you might think of Battletoads. This game was published by Milton Bradley, but developed by Rare. It was released in September 1990. Rare went on to develop Battletoads which was published by Tradewest and released in June of 1991 (Source Wikipedia). I would guess they probably re-used a bunch of the same game engine. On a couple of other topics I know I've seen orbs be in different locations, but I'm not sure how to luck manipulate that. I know I've seen level 2 orb 3 floating instead of on the pillar, but I'm sure that one would be slower. I realize I didn't need to put in my initials, but since it didn't make or break a milestone (I was shooting for 10 min) I figured I may as well. On graphics I stated that you might call this a 2.5D platformer. I'm not sure what else to call it. The graphics are decidedly 2D, and the view is a fixed side view that scrolls. There is decidedly a Z plane though(rendered on a fixed diagonal), and hit detection is decidedly 3D.

I never thought David Wise wasn't that famous, he composed for Battletoads and Time Lord and plenty other games with recognizable tunes.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I'll give you a yes for these reasons: 1.This game has happy music. 2.I haven't played this game before, but I like it after watching this one. 3.The muscle of Hero is strong, the imagenation of Time Lord told me that it must be a magician but it's not,so it's funny.
Do the work.

That Mexican is IMPOSSIBLE to beat in real time. Do I need to make a Game Genie code to stop his health from regenerating so I can actually play this game?

Voting yes due to the guy roughing up the clam 6:10 ~ 6:48 And because the game is good enough to be fun (not crazy fun as metal slug or such but fun enough).

I'm going to vote no because I've never played the game and that made it hard to see anything super human or interesting, and that made it quite boring. Sorry

Yes vote from me. It fast and enjoyable. Also, from the above comments about the difficulty, sounds like a worthy game to TAS.

Stop the movie at frame 11300 and attempt to kill that boss yourself, and you'll see why this needed to be a TAS.

Not the best looking or most exciting game, but it looks well played, so why not? Yes vote from me.

This TAS is borderline publishable - I'll wait a bit more for some more input to come in.

I voted meh. While the run seemed technically sound, the game itself didn't overly excite me.
