Can't wait to see this movie completed. FF IV has always been one of my favorites. (First one I ever completed). Sadly, the file located on your website (FF2.smv) desynchs for me after the party leaves the castle. Ah well. :(

Updated the file on the WWW under each of my posts. Had to get rid of the save/reset before the cave because it caused too many fights in the tower of zot. Also tried to do some save/resets after the cave, but was useless. This one also grabs the ether in the cave because of a changed strategy that I never tried in my test runs. This is now 64 frames slower than the test run because of the ether, which took about 308 or so frames to grab, so it's ok since all will be regained upon the new strategy that requires the ether. Also about 50 seconds faster in-game.

Okay, I finally got round to watching (thanks for the hack, HHS). It looks neat-o so far, but... why did you take the black chocobo back to the forest? Can't you just land it near the castle and go in?

Bad news. File updated, but Possible savings of approximately 990 frames are up for grabs here. I managed to save 380ish of them. You'll notice that I take a back attack and have Cid take most of his hp in dmg. Then he kills himself before the Dark Elf can start casting his long chain of spells. The full savings is 1135 if you didn't need to do anything to get the auto-death. The best method I could come up with involves deequipping the iron shield from kain during the D.Mist fight. Then during the last encounter before the Dark Elf, manipulate a first strike (unless it's a double mage fight), and unequipping the hammer and equipping the shield. Run away. And then fight the Dark Elf and immediately die. This method would save 990 of the 1135 frames. This is the best option that I could come up with.

Finished with first little go at the Sisters fight. Personally I think it's a work of art, but thats because this strategy is extremely convoluted... about 30 seconds faster real time and 2min 40sec faster in-game time compared to test run. This puts me about 3min of gain away from earning a sub 3hr run.

It's been a while since I've played the game -- but what are you going to do with the Change Rod that you picked up in the Village of Mist? Does it have a special power, or just a high attack? The Lilith Rod has a higher attack, but I can see that it would probably be difficult to find it, although it is possible to get on Mt. Ordeals.

He did switch Tellah into it briefly for the Dark Elf fight, but that may have just been to kill time.

The Change Rod (and the Lilith Rod for that matter) increases wisdom by 5, which makes black magic deal more damage. With both the Change Rod (wisdom +5) and Tiara (wisdom +10) equipped, Rydia's damage output is increased by about 66%.

Tellah also needs it for the sisters fight to do enough dmg to kill the fat one in 2 shots, otherwise he doesn't do enough dmg.

Redid everything from the castle till killing the sisters again. Lots of things need to be said about this update. 1. I changed route in the middle of the castle because I can use the castle floor (not the red carpet) to increase my step counter without getting into an encounter. If I had needed to take just 1 more step in the Tower of Zot, I would have gotten into an encounter and woulda ruined this. So this nullified getting into another fight and lowered my random encounters by 1. 2. I performed the item duplication glitch here at the flame dog fight. You may be wondering why I bothered changing around the group back after the Dark Elf fight and then again before the sisters. It's because as I had discovered, the only group organization that would allow me to kill the flame dog with taking only 2 attacks was this way. 3. Doing the item duplication glitch will save over a minute worth of frames over the course of the next 3 fights. I won't tell you why yet, but stay tuned to find out. =) 4. You'll notice that when Kain comes to take me to the tower of zot that I moved onto the same square as him. This cost a frame, but I thought it looked cool...and in a 3hr movie, 1 frame for entertainment is perfectly acceptable. 5. Sisters fight is 996 frames faster, but took an extra 153 frames to get to them because of the item duplication glitch. Total savings from previous WIP = 843 frames. I don't know if I'll be able to improve this sisters fight at this time. The luck manipulation for half the fight was nearly unheard of. I spent very few frames manipulating the fight. Of course I'll try because it's a long fight, but I don't know how feasible it'll be. This puts me at 43sec ahead of test run.

There are a few things here and there with the video conversion. Not sure if that's a Youtube player thing, or if it was in the video. A couple of the fights here and there leave an outline or shadow of the defeated enemies during the first fight with Yang and during the fight at Yang's castle, for example. That being said, the concept is an awesome idea, and the WIP looks great, so I'd say mission accomplished. :)

For those watching the WIP in snes9x, I've written a Lua script to slow down the game when the dialog/text box appears on the screen. Handy for those who like reading the dialog and haven't memorized FF2. Don't know if it's the most efficient way, and of course it slows down music when text shows, but it works. For me, it makes the run more enjoyable to watch... Only problem right now is that sometimes, when the text box is full, the box closes before you can read the last line. :) Edit the pausetime variable to adjust speed to your liking. http://trueserve.org/ff2-dialog.lua (edit: fixed some bugs) Let me know if you think anything else would be useful, or if this doesn't work. (edit: found the room title flag. script now pauses a few frames to show you the room title.)

First run on Valvalis is done, but i'm sure this is improvable. We'll see anyway. This puts me at 7900+ frames ahead of the test run. Enjoy and such

That is because it was encoded at such low bitrate, to generate less traffic (and consequently, to be able to serve more clients).

Hi Deign, Sorry for bringing this question up out of nowhere... I watched the segmented version of your run on your website, and I had a few curiousities and questions.... 1. What is the purpose of using life potions on the dragon machines when you are leveling inside of the robot? 2. How do you keep the 4 elements in the Milon form during the battle? 3. Would it be worth it to have Rosa chant FAST on any characters in the Zeromus battle before the Crystal is used? (assuming you could avoid the 'black hole' attack) I quickly backread and didn't see any of these addressed, so I apologize if you have to repeat yourself if you answer these questions. Thanks! By the way, your TAS is looking good so far up to Valvalis.

1. The life potions resurrect the D.Machines with 0 health, so they promptly die again, adding their experience to the total he gets upon winning the battles. He did explain 2 to me at some point, but I forgot.

I'll quickly answer 3 here, Before Zeromus transforms via Crystal, you'll see him shake quite often. When he does this, it erases all status affects (including wall). Thanks Deign -- most of my questions are answered now, thanks to that link. However, if the Dragon Machine comes back to life with zero HP, why do you still chant Weak on him everytime? Wouldn't one hit automatically kill him?

They come back with 0 hp and then die when life is casted on them. Then i hit the alert and a new one is summoned with full hp. Because you can't target a dead enemy and I can only get in 2 lifes before it's dead.
