Although this game is very linear it's still a fun TAS to have done.

I spend a whole lot more time on this TAS than on the previous one, I hope it shows. I managed to cut about 10 seconds of the previous (canceled submission)

Emulator used: openMSX 0.8.1
MSX model used: Panasonic FS-A1WSX

  • Stage 01: Make sure you catch all the fish before entering the shop @ 483 - Gamble to buy needed items. I could have saved time by just getting 4x multiplier but I decided to go for the max amount of fish.
  • Stage 01: Enter Warp @ 237
  • Stage 06: Enter Warp @ 145
  • Stage 09: Enter Warp @ 335
  • Stage 12: Enter Santa's Cave @ 181 get the document fight the dragon - make sure you end up on a number that ends in 9 7 5 3 1 or 0, otherwise you get litle dancing penguins which takes up a lot of time.
  • Stage 13: Enter Warp @ 355
  • Stage 15: Enter Warp @ 078
  • Stage 18: Enter Warp @ 418
  • Stage 24: Enter Shop @ 587 buy the document and fight the dragon (aiming for 8 penguins) - 8 penguins to end :)

DarkKobold: In general, autoscrollers make for very boring TASes. There is very little that can be done to spice them up. While this game is not specifically an autoscroller, once the penguin hits top speed, their is little to differentiate it from a standard autoscroller. After considering the opinions posted in this thread and the previous one, even people who had played the game in the past, found this a poor game to TAS. The levels are repetitive, the action is questionable, and there is only a single boss, which is repeated twice. While the TAS was well done, the audience doesn't seem to see this as a publishable game.

This is exactly what I think when I imagine a TAS of this game. Awesome job on this run, yes vote for me. Just wondering though: you just need to pause the game a certain amount of time to get the good ending?!

Yup, it's the very first example of Hideo Kojima's craziness: pause exactly once to get the good ending, pause any other number of times to get a bad one.

Actually, I believe the formula is 4*n+1, where n starts at 0. So, 1, 5, 9, etc pauses. Also, game overs reset the n-counter.

I'm on the fence about this one. Everything up until the ten minute mark was great, then just a couple of minor issues kind of hold me back. To begin with, I think the good ending would be preferred. But then about 10:00 or so, you collect an orange heart that I don't really think does much for entertainment value. Then about 10:10 some lag happens, probably because of too many sprites on screen. I'd suggest killing the happy faces before they shoot. At the second orange heart of the level, it's a lot more fun. You smash through a bunch of boulders. But it seems like you only hit the ones in the middle. Try to hit as many as you can without slowing down. In the next water level you collect a green heart, which gives you more time. This actually makes the tally at the end of the level take slightly longer. You should get it when it's purple or avoid it altogether. Otherwise, this is a really great run. Very fun to watch.

Heisanevilgenius I agree again with your findings, there is a bit of room for improvement. - less fish @ the slot machine - using green hearts more efficient to get closer, I tried however make it as efficient as possible. - making sure you don't get dancing penguins after killing the dragon I hope someone else will pick up the challenge and make a better TAS :) I didn't even look for exploits or glitches (are there any?)

I don't believe green hearts get you any closer. They just give you more time on your clock. In most of the levels this doesn't matter because you use a warp so it doesn't tally up your leftover time.

the amount of penguins are based on the last digit of your time when you kill the dragon... so it's 2 4 6 or 8 penguins. It only checks for even. One heart adds 50 seconds btw

If one pause is all that's necessary to get a good ending, would it make sense to edit in one pause? Anyway, this game got repetitive for me quite quickly. It certainly looks difficult, but it didn't entertain me very much. I'm reminded of Skitchin, but for some reason I liked that game more. I'm voting Meh, leaning towards No.

Might I remind you this game is from 1986 on hardware from 1983 that means it's still made in the 8bit era, this was as good as MSX games where at that time.... as a matter of fact Penguin Adventure was one of the more ground breaking games at that time with great graphics and good music. Try to play some MSX if you have the chance.

Yeah, I played Antarctic Adventure about a year ago and then more recently played Penguin Adventure and was blown away by it. It's like going from the arcade Mario Bros. to Super Mario Bros. 3 in just a couple of years without the sequels in-between.

I played these games for the first time when I was around 10. I still remember the excitement from opening up the sealed carts and playing the games for the first time. Because it takes longer! :) Without the pause, you have less time needed to finish the game.

The issue isn't whether the game and system are good, it's whether the game is suited for a TAS and if your run is sufficiently fast and entertaining.

Please stop "tasing" this "game". edit: Also it worths mention that you think that your submissions rejected JUST BECAUSE it's played on MSX (according to your many posts and unrelevant/out-of-question sentences and troll smileys and other things). Now here's the truth: of course it's not the case. The problem is the insanely huge repetitiveness of the game and it's absolutely shows nothing compared to a simple unassisted speedrun. TASVideos has high standards, both for quality and entertainment, and this movie didn't qualified. This has NOTHING to do with the MSX console.
