Comments

This submission is my 4th. I never thought I would actually complete it! That's because, chronologically, I played BOF 2 BEFORE BOF 1, and since the former caught more of my attention, the latter seemed rather pale... But BOF 1 is indeed the prequel to BOF 2 (the Goddess will leave seeds of evil that will grow up to be Deathevn in BOF 2).
Here are general tricks to save frames
  • Random battles are totally avoidable, except in Mogu's conscience (for some reason)
  • Having people die is a big plus, especially before Nina gets Renew. This way, she gets it more quickly.
  • Dead people can cast magic outside of battle. So when Nina gets renew, she can play dead.
  • I try to minimize the use of the status window. Therefore, I plan ahead and to every change (equipment, spells, change of rows) at once.
  • Death warps are a time saver.
  • Towards the very end, Agni is a time saver. Goda and Jade have such high defense that Rudra and Puka can't do enough damage to compensate 999 damage each turn.
  • Similarly, with Agni on AB, I can program the bosses so they only attack. Jade hasn't cast any magic, and the Goddess can keep attacking for up to 8 rounds
  • Karn, in his transformed status (Puka, Shin), becomes a killing machine. It's a little detour getting the spells, but it's worth it.
  • It's fairly easy to have bosses (not) dropping items. It depends on the course of action during the battle.
  • Very low HP characters seem much stronger. And if it's combined with attack-up, it's even better
  • No need for most chests. I either buy everything in a store or maniuplate battles so I won't need to heal
And now, for the battles...
  • Frog : I needed it to drop a fire stone. That's why I wait for so long in the last round.
  • Knight : With a lot of luck, I was able to save a fire stone AND get another one.
I bought my marble 3s (for mogu's dream) in here plus any herbs I needed for the whole game)
  • Morte/Mortea : Using that extra fire stone came handy. After Mortea, only one of the soldiers was still alive, this way, the 2ns wizard fight was quicker.
  • Wizard : I only needed him to cast thunder, the weakest spell.
  • Dark D Fort soldiers : the little detour to get a boomerang was worth it. They all die at the same time
  • General : Down in 3 rounds. PLus he kills bow, making the death warp quicker
In Romero, I bought all the acorn I need
  • Wisp : Not an easy fight, especially because of his multiple hitting attack.
  • General and lancers : the boomerang always comes in handy.
  • Gremlin : a long and tedious fight. In his second phase, he only casts his multiple target spell. In order for it to be weaker, I needed to kill him before destroyed 87,5% of his health. Otherwise, he would have been about 35% stronger.
  • Talon : My protnB got useful. But it's still difficult to fight alone.
In Auria, I purposely sold all my Cures and other expensive items so I could avoid the faery sidequest. This way I could buy the gold bar quicker
  • In Bleak, there is a nice cameo by Chun Li from Street Fighter
  • The Sandworm is easy, and so is letting Bo die
  • However, I did need him against Spyeye, so I resurected him for a round
  • Cloud : Since I ran out of life 1, I needed him to cast single target spells
  • Knight and archer : my dragon powers come handy sometimes
  • Secret base : watch out for the boomerang!
  • Squid : water-based fiends and weak against lightning
  • Dark D Ship : again, the boomerang is useful against stacks of enemies
  • Octo : another water-based enemy
  • MOrteo : an undead enemy. Need I say more? I had Kain die here
  • Toad : he needs to aim at Ox as often as possible. This way he dies...
... and the Death warp inside Krypt is instant.
  • Grimfowl : a fire-based enemy.
  • SLimeX : the toughest battle of them all. I wanted Nina to survive so she could get renew earlier. But the bastards wouldn't let the Hero do critical damage against them...
  • Myst : I have to calculate the number of damage so he doesn't use Cure 3
  • Pincer : another water-based enemy
Right after Gobi can transform into the big fish, he can buy (in a flea market) Karn's most powerful dagger, the DarkDR. And since I use luck manipulation, I get it quite quickly
  • K Roahc : they have very low defense. And with counterattacks, they are taken care of quickly
  • RugaX : I took advantage of the low HP strategy here...
  • G Fly : ... here...
  • FLowerX : and here. thankfully, it's too busy poisoning. Also, I've never been able to hit it critically on its second wind...
  • Horntoad : contrary to what FAQS say, Horntoad doesn't always use its body slam on its second wind
  • Dream World : The geyser field has unexpected shortcuts throughout. They all look the same
  • Mothro : when he is complete, he can easily be taken care of.
  • MOte : a tricky fight. If he is hit more than 15 times, his defense rises to 320. I was able to kill him before that. PLus, a low HP Ryu was helpful
  • Cerl : Puka does the trick with his rolling attack (that uses less frames than the regular one)
  • Dragon powers : Bain is easy on AB. Avian is a pain because I couldn't lose time healing.
  • Zog : Rudra and Puka were on fire for this fight! Despite Jade's wishes, I didn't use Dragon HEart...
  • Sara : it lowers white dragon's HP to one, and that includes Sara.
  • GOda and Jade : Agni does the trick. The use is optimal; their high defense prohibits the Puka/Rudra strategy
  • GOddess :The longest sequence I got without her using her spell is 8 rounds.
Possible improvement : pray for better luck in the battles, try buying more life 1, try the money glitch on the GBA in the future Screenshot suggestion : 263 164, the Chun Li cameo

FractalFusion: I'll be judging this one.
mmarks: Added DailyMotion module
FractalFusion: Accepting for publication. It's a RPG TAS that does what RPG TASes should do. That is, a whole lot of planning and luck manipulation.

I have no issue with the second, non-streaming version of the video. Perhaps archive.org dropped your connection while downloading? Verify the file size. I still plan to watch this. I am sure to have time this weekend to do so.

I really can't believe someone voted no on this, although, it was probably just some troll who doesn't know quality when he sees it. I greatly enjoyed this TAS. I watched it in one sitting mostly, stopping only to get some food and a couple drinks. :3 I give this TAS a big yes vote. I would love to see a Best Ending TAS for BoF3 some time in the future. ;3

BoF 3 only has 'good end' and 'bad end', there isn't a middle ground like 1 and 2.

I no longer have the movie file, so I can't verify the size. Archive.org did drop the connection at first, though, and when I retried, the download completed the second time without an error message (as far as I know - was doing something else while waiting for it to finish). Well, if it works fine for you, then it looks like the problem was on my end.

You should specify in the description exactly what the entertainment trade offs included are, and why you included them.

I enjoyed it. As with most RPG runs, some explanatory subtitles would make it even better. It's been a long time since I played it, and I wouldn't notice a sequence break or clever trick unless someone pointed it out. I'll add a yes vote and the promise to watch it again if someone adds those subtitles.

More likely the person believes RPG are not all that fun to watch. Especially ones that are 4.25 hours long. And no, it wasn't me. My pov is, a RPG run is only fun to watch if I'm familiar with the game. I did play this game, so I did like it, but it does lack that universal enjoyment quality.

Nifty. I can help out if someone wants to make a commentary track. There's a few moments I didn't remember that well, such as making you sit through that slow elevator a few times.. ;-) BoF always had something for me, though. Hard to say what. Probably the music and the setting.

I don't think commentaries work well on games that most people will put on fast forward.

The original BoFII TAS had a commentary by Comicalflop (and somebody else, IIRC). I enjoyed listening to it while watching the latest TAS, resyncing whenever there was a route change or when the newer TAS performed better (like in boss fights). And I'm still waiting for the opportunity to watch this...

I finally finished watching it! I was surprised at the fact that you never actually needed to finish a single random encounter, which is impressive! The only boss you seem to have struggled on was Gremlin, but it was actually kind of suspenseful and entertaining. I'm also glad you went for the "best" ending and found Chun-Li. Yes vote. Also, I still don't understand the abbreviations of the items to this day. Stn? Also, I always assumed D.Hrt was Dragon Hurt, since it... hurts dragons. Oh, and yes vote.

D.Hrt = Dragon Heart It is a song that fatally injures any dragon. That is why a, or Ryu, has his HP reduced to 1 when this item is used. Stn = Stone These stones are magical, as they are either F.Stn, B.Stn, or C.Stn (Fire, Bolt, and Cold), which cast Flare, Fry, and Frost.

Agh, that's way too obvious in retrospect. By the way, did you happen to get those descriptions from anywhere in particular? I tried the menu in the game but the help command wasn't very helpful.

I looked at GameFAQs. I suppose the list in there isn't authoritative, but they are all very good guesses. Ctrl+F for "Section VI" on this page to see the list of items with their abbreviated names followed by a good guess to their full names.

That was long. So much time is cutscenes and walking around. But it deserves to be published. Everything was well-planned out. And that's what a RPG TAS should do. I vote yes. janus, I have two questions: - Did you use Lua for some parts of this run? - You are suggesting a screenshot of Chun-Li. Perhaps it would be better to use a screenshot of a battle? There are some good ones.

- I don't quite understand lua; I try to figure the game mechanics by myself - I'm opened to suggestions for screenshots. However, I think the Chun Li one might attract people btw, will it be published soon?

We will have to wait Fractal's approval judgement before it gets available for publication. I'm planning to publish your movie once it gets accepted, but I'll be available to do it tomorrow night (in Eastern Time). So you will have to wait at least a day before it gets published.

Finally watched this; too bad I didn't have time to say anything until post-publication. This was an awesome run. It was amazing that you were able to avoid random events by luck manipulation alone, save for that one area in that one enemy's mind. I also forgot how much more annoying some of BoF II's music is compared to the original BoF. The cave music in this game was not an annoying 15 second (or whatever) loop, making this one easier to listen to. Definite yes vote, even though this was already published.

I presume they still need to be uploaded as streaming videos? Archive streaming (page 1 link) => File not found Dailymotion => Not published yet

I've tested it, and it works. There's probably something wrong in your side, or you did something wrong.
