Are all the SNES movies on this site made solely using snes9x or zsnes in slo-mo? I was under the impression that it would be more like making a flash movie, tell the computer what buttons to press at exactly which moments. programming through the entire game, and then sitting back and watching as the computer played the game as you programmed it to. Can someone tell me how it is really done, or provide links that would help me out? Thanks.

both points are correct. the movies are made using the slowmotion/rerecord properties of the snes9x/famtasia, but the movie data is actually a flow of button sequences that are timed with frames (as opposed to actual film)

I think this goes back to a point of the FAQ answers made: It's easier to come up with the right button sequence by actually pressing the buttons as you play.

So the record SMB3 video was done with only slow-mo and savestates?

Part of other videos have been made with hex editing. Often menues and such things, where behaviour is easily predicted. But the easiest way to get the right button sequence is more than often just to input it by playing the game.

So how can you "manipulate luck" as described on the techniques page? One example would be the hands on World 8. Just savestate right before going over them and then keep going over them until they don't grab you? Additionally, if the games are played by humans in slo-mo, then the games can always be improved, even if only by a few frames. If the buttons are planned (trying different ones first to see which is best) and then executed by a program, it would seem that would be the only case in which the game could be played "perfectly."

Actually Bisqwit has said that he used a hex editor in his rockman movie. Anyway, manipulating luck involves pressing random buttons or killing certain enemies, or delaying a split second, or killing enemies at different times in hopes that the enemies will react differently or drop different items. As to the second, I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying, but we do that as well. While the only sure way to make a movie is to make a computer try every single button combination. But we still try doing things to make the movie different. Sometimes a computer can be used though. For instance, I'm making a super bust-a-move movie for fun. I made a computer progam that would show me what the fastest way to beat a level is. I'm also considering doing this for puyo-puyo, but its much harder to manipulte luck in that game, so I don't know.

Agreed. None of the videos on this site are absolutely "perfect" and probably never will be.

Well, you can "go frame by frame" by using 2% speed (where each frame takes a little under a second) or 3% speed (where each frame takes a little over half a second--I'm talking NTSC here). If you're quick, you can get a button combination you've memorized into the game in the exact frames you want them by playing at such low speeds and pressing the buttons in just the right sequence with just the right timing. Watch out for delays, though; the time when the game scans for input may not be exactly the same as the time when the game displays the results of your actions. Hex-editing the movie file is a real pain because you have to keep scooting the button or button combo back and forth and testing it until you find exactly where it's supposed to go. Do it only if you absolutely have to.
