about the Tropicalo fight, do you think hit twice at the start would end fight quicker?
I tried, the "diving thing" occurs if I do this.
About sprite weapon, how bout changing it to axe as a primary weapon? then the girl to get whip as a primary weapon, is it faster or no? (scratch that idea if you goin to use boomerang / gloves heavily instead of spells)
Yes I'm going to equip them that way (Sprite - Axe, Girl -Whip)
Wow, you sure showed those werewolves, plus that was a pretty funny bug with their skeletons. It's amazing how much stronger you're able to make the characters seem than they normally would be. I guess the Tropicalo fight just looks so improveable in comparison to the other fights (but I'll take your word for it if you're sure it isn't improveable).
Oh yes, the game looks pretty easy in the movie and that with very low level considered the level you would be when normaly playing. I tried to rush through the game like I do in the movie with normal playing, that's hard, just one hit from an enemy can be enough to take you out. I must say the creating of this movie is also a real training for me for the game, I memorized all the maps and where to sprint. And yes, the Tropicalo fight may really no be the best fight but I really tried everything and he's not significantly faster to beat (unless you get more critical hits, but I really tried very much and couldn't get more than one)
Also, I hope you're able to do some cool stuff with the 3-playerness of the game. Like controlling them separately in battles, taking turns killing monsters with criticals while the other characters run by, etc.
Yes I'll have some fun with the 3 players :D

*update* http://nvdata.pilif.ch/SoM.zip Up to after the fight with the 2 werewolves to rescue the girl I've also redone the movie from the leveling at the green drops on. Just after I had that done I realized something. I could set the controls of all characters on the same buttons so they move the same. I won't do that all the time, but there are locations where it's faster to make them move the same. I can always switch from AI to controlled with the start button. AI is handy for sprinting. I can always change the characters and then make one sprinting when the other is loading up. I'm going to improve this with the all-move-the-same-"trick" sometime, maybe tomorrow, I'm just to sick of it for today, I spent the last 6 hours playing and testing for the movie. Uhm yes, about the fight with Tropicalo. I really can't hit him earlier, and I always tested if I could hit him more times without diving in immediatly the next time he appears, but that only worked one time, all the other tmes he dived in immediatly.

Definitely can't wait to see you do that snes9x version, because I am one of those obsessed enough with the sound. I am not able to watch the zsnes version with sound (Windows XP), and I can't stand watching movies without the sound.
Yes you can! There's this really cool program I found recently while looking for tools to run Tomb Raider on Win2k. After a while I thought "HEY! Theres this RPG movies from Saturn I ALWAYS wanted to see SO much" I always cried cause I couldnt get these old versions of Zsnes to run. Then I tried to run it with VDMSound and I was the happiest guy on the world. I spent the following 10 hours watching the Terranigma run in one sitting. Awesome movie Saturn! http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&q=VDMSound&btnG=Google-Suche&meta= Get this thing from somewhere, install it and then right-click the Zsnes.exe and choose "Run with VDMSound" Hey Saturn, maybe you could write about this program somewhere on your homepage, I'm sure theres much people that dont know about it and cant get older Zsnes versions to run on XP or 2k

Can't Gens play Sega CD? (If so, Sonic CD must be done)
Yes it can but the rerecord doesn't work. And I think there won't be implementation for this in the near future, as far as I can see savestates don't even work properly, must be because of the CD format... but I dunno anything technical...

You scored 100% Beginner, 66% Intermediate, 81% Advanced, and 72% Expert! I think that's pretty good considered that I'm only 14 and English isn't my primary language

There are some monsters that can be one-shotted if you get a critical hit on them. Rabbites are a good example. Have you considered doing that? I'm sure no one would mind a quick pause to liquify a monster here and there.
Rabites can be taken out in one hit when you're level 1. But they give only 1 experience point, I don't think it's worth to go after them. Hm I think Lullabuds can be taken out with one critical hit at level 1, but as said, I like to keep the leveling so far the way it is. I'm going to redo the leveling at the Green Drops and try to make it a bit more entertaining

I was wondering about that myself, but realized that he was trying to pick up the 150 gold needed for the Dwarf Village (50 to enter the elder's sideshow, and another 100 to forge the Rusty Sword.. both are necessary to advance the plot, it seems)
I already have 150 GP when I leave Potos. 100 from the Mantis Ant and 50 from the chest in the Elders house. The monster killing was for only the EXP (and maybe the money for that... uhm thingy I bought there, the name won't come to my mind atm =) )
However, I also didn't like the level up sequence much.. couldn't you just manipulate some enemies to drop chests with gold/items in them and then sell them at the shop to get your 150 Gold faster, or at the very least, doing more "killing as you go" instead of running back and forth killing the same enemy over and over?
Hm the killing as you go thingy wouldn't look to cool either I think. I myself prefer watching 3 minutes of pure monster killing over 15 minutes where I have to stop every 15 seconds to kill one monster. And I think the green drops are the best way to get EXP at this point as they copy themselfes
Actually, now that I think about it, wouldn't you need only 100 Gold? You can still go through the sideshow by only paying the 50 entrance fee (you don't need to make the additional 100 gold donation to the sprite), and since you get it back immediately afterwards, you'll still have the 100 to pay for the sword forging..
It doesn't really matter if you have the 100 GP, I went in with 90 GP and said yes for the donation (if you say no he'll ask again and again and again...) and everything went fine

One thing I noticed when fighting Tropicalo. When you use charge attacks, try to have the attack finish just as the boss becomes vulnerable. That'll leave you more time to ready more hits.
When I hit him more than 1, or when waits longer 2, times he'll immediatly dive in again after he comes up the next time.
Another thing, is that some items have a +Agi bonus to go with them. Extra agility will save you a tiny amount of frames for preparing an attack, or running. I don't know if it's worth going out of your way to get the items, but prolonged use of the items will add up. They are: Quilted hood- +5 agi helm. Girl and sprite only. Griffin helm -+5 agi helm. Best helm, hero only. Wolf's Band - +5 agi bracelet. Ninja gloves - +5 agi bracelet. Protection from slow effects. Faeries' Ring - +5 agi bracelet. Best def and Mdef in the game. lots of status protection.
I think these are only available quite late in the game, I'll check
Just about all character equipment can be found from treasure chests and luck manipulation. Handy for equipping characters on the fly. The act of opening the chest will take time, but it may save time over making a trip to town. Since you won't have alot of gold to spend, it may be the only way to get decent protection for your characters. Luck manipulation would mean you won't need much armor anyways.
Sure, I'll look that I can get as much as possible from chests I'm curious how the fight with the Tiger in Elinee's Castle will turn out, that beast always was pure pain in the game

I think it wouldn't be bad if you named your character something other than A, Zero. You get to pick the name of course, since your run. But I think a good name would add some entertainment value to the video.
Hm maybe. Let's do some calculation... I assume there are about 400-800 occurences of the three hero names in the total game (scripts from RPGs are often much bigger as you think, I know what I'm talkin about, I do some translations myself), let's take 600 for our calculation. 600 names, let's take 4 letters for an average name. 4 letters that's 3 letters more than 1 per name. 600*3=1800. A second consists of 60 frames, 1800/60=30. Calculated extra lenght for specific names: 30 seconds. That's about nothing in a run like this =)

*update* http://mitglied.lycos.de/keinbenutzername/Secret%20of%20Mana%20(U).zip Beaten Tropicalo. I've taken him out in about 45 secs, that's about 3 times the time it took to beat the Mantis Ant I've included 2 savestates, one at the opening entrance to Gaia's Navel and one at the beginning of the Dwarf Village

looks great so far, but im not sure what is that wobble at frame 35400's are for?
That's because I have to wait for a mushboom to move right so that I he don't stops me there and I can have a smooth run
And at where theres narrow path right before stair-down to dwarf cave, would it be faster if you let bat go in, and then go up (instead of hit the bat and push)?
I dunno, I'll try later EDIT:
(edit, ooh that must be 2 flowers disappearing trick?)
If you turn the "show input" option on, you can see that I press some buttons while I run there, that's for the luck manipulation, it depends on the input where the enemys are placed

It (the latest Windows executable) is available at: http://nvdata.pilif.ch/snes9xw-improvement5.zip (version 5) Snes9x 1.43 improvement v5 Newest change(s) in this version: * Made "Pause When Inactive" an option in the Settings dialog, so you can turn it off if you want Snes9x to keep playing games when it isn't the active window. If you also want sound to play while it's inactive, you can set Sound Driver to "FMOD DirectSound" in the Sound Settings menu.

Is it faster to get the girl later in the game?
I think so. Anyway I'm gonna do some testing when I've got some free time lying around
Also.. Can't you wait with buying those cobra braclets until you arrive at upperland? I recon they've got better armour there.
I'll check
And I thought land slide was stronger than gem missile against the evil wall?
I'm not sure. I have savestates from all the bosses in the game, so that's no problem to check.

I wasn't completely lazy the last few days: http://mitglied.lycos.de/keinbenutzername/SoM%20Timeattack%20Stuff.doc When this is finished I only have to do some calculations and then I can get started with the run One thing: I'll not buy all of the armor and stuff that's written in the doc, it's just written for better overview. I think you can do some very good job on luck manipulation with the bosses so there won't be too much need for good armor, at least I'll not have to buy some new armor everytime I enter a new village

*update* Instead of waiting for the 3rd jewel fisherman randomness manipulation to be found (not sure if this sounded right ... oh well), I simply started my any% run of Illusion of Gaia. I am, at the moment, planing my route through the first dungeon, and the movie currently stops right after entering the dungeon (so right after Hamlet gives me the key, I open the door, run down and enter the dungeon, then the movie stops) If you find anything wrong, or anything that could go faster, please tell me. I'll be happy to modify anything before going too far into the game :) Also, any positive/constructive/negative comments are welcome. Here's the link: http://www.parelestia.com/iog_any_percent.zip Rom name and version: Illusion of Gaia (U).smc
Great someone takes this up! Maybe I get motivated through this project to continue SoM =) I haven't watched the movie, I will do this later, don't have the time right now
