The Run
Well, this is nothing more and nothing less than a TAS "tixe-69" from dlroW oiraM repuS. Don't get it? Simple! It's a TAS of all 96 exits of Super Mario World inverted!
dlroW oiraM repuS is a Super Mario World hack that basically reverses the entire game. Instead of starting in Yoshi's Island, we start in Valley of Bowser hahah crazy huh? And that's not all! In addition to the game being reversed, all the levels are also reversed. You start at the end of the level and have to get to the beginning!
This TAS completes all 96 exits in the shortest time possible. There are certainly many improvements (and I confess that at times I prioritized entertainment over gaining a few pixels), but overall the TAS is well optimized.
I searched and couldn't find any other 96 exit TAS from this hack, so this is indeed the fastest time and I had no one to compare it to. I won't comment level by level here because there's no need.
Important Notes:
- Since the game is backwards and 90% of the levels are to the left, corner clips are essential! Super Mario World pulls the player to the left if they are inside a block, and so corner clips are always favorable, even if I have to lose a few pixels to be in the correct position.
- I always prioritize doing corner clips on rows of consecutive blocks, as I gain a lot of pixels by keeping Mario flying between the blocks.
- It's faster to lose flight to clip solid blocks (like in Valley Fortress) because Mario is pulled to the left by walking inside the block.
- I don't know if I should put the branch as "tixe-69" which is "96 exit" backwards and follow the tradition or if I should leave "all 96 exits". What do you think? 🥴
That's all for today! This is another TAS that I did some time ago and I came to the conclusion that it's worth being here at TASvideos!
DrD2k9: Claiming for judging.
DrD2k9: I enjoyed this run more than I anticipated. It was interesting seeing Mario going backwards through otherwise familiar levels. In particular, I liked the idea of the switch palaces removing blocks instead of adding them to the stages. Overall, the run seems well played; though I'd be curious if implementing improvements would bring the time closer to the comparable goal of the normal game.
Accepting.
Procedural note: Removed link to the hack from the submission notes. While linking to patches is generally fine, we cannot link to ROMs of commercial games (even hacked ones) as they contain copyrighted material.
Note to Publisher: If the publication team would prefer the "stixe 69 lla" branch name instead, feel free to change this. Also the run does sync on BizHawk 2.10
