Black Tiger is a hack-and-slash arcade platformer released by Capcom in 1987. The barbarian hero progresses through eight rounds, each with its own boss. The player can collect coins to purchase weapon and armour upgrades.
Game objectives
- Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.9.1
- Uses screenwrap glitches to skip ahead to most round bosses
Comments
The TAS really starts to take off from Round 3 onwards, when the screenwrap glitch becomes useful. The glitch is then used in every subsequent round. To perform the glitch, simply attack while jumping (or falling as per Round 7) to a vertical position that would ordinarily hit the top of the screen. The player will instead "wrap" into the next section of the map.
Round by round comments
Round 1
Round 1 is a straightforward journey to the boss. In general it is useful to get as close as possible to bosses, because the hero's attack fires a spread of dagger projectiles. For this boss, only the yellow-eyed part needs to be destroyed.
Round 2
Another simple trip to the boss, ensuring the round ends with enough coins to purchase a weapon upgrade in Round 3.
Round 3
First use of the screenwrap glitch. The wrap is performed a few times to get to a particular map position that enables walking straight through the "wall" and into the boss arena. The bosses all have (frustrating) varying periods of invincibility after each section of their health is depleted.
Round 4
A couple of regular jumps and then into the next screenwrap glitch. I'm sure everyone recognizes this boss.
Round 5
A "POW" screen-wide enemy killer is picked up on a specific frame to maximise the coins dropped. Coins from one more enemy and smashing a pot ensure that another weapon upgrade can be purchased in Round 6. The screenwrap glitch is then used again to get to the boss.
Round 6
A trip to the store for a weapon upgrade, some regular platforming, then another screenwrap glitch to the boss.
Round 7
On this and only this round the screenwrap glitch is used to wrap down rather than up. (Sidenote: This one is RTA-viable, I'm not sure if the others are.)
Round 8
A quick screenwrap and then a walk over to the dragon boss, whose hitbox is less forgiving than the prior dragon boss.
Darkman425: Claiming for judging.
Darkman425: Some pretty neat screenwrap glitching and solid optimization. A shame that the sound gets cut off in Round 7 & 8 due to what I think is a consequence of the screenwrap glitches. At least it's not smacking at rocks for a long while for score, at least.
