From really disliking these type of games, your tas really has shown there is nothing but joy and excitement! Really looking forward to this and even though you scroll through texts really fast, I manage to read something once in a while.
So we talked with Almo, the guy who holds the unassisted speedrun WR on this game, about the strategies in Japanese TTYD.
So, a major problem in the Japanese version of this game is that we not only not regain HP after a chapter, we also don't get full FP, which is important. We also sometimes level up which means that we get healed completely which then also heals HP.
The thing is that we don't know exactly what is faster because there are so many things we have to consider when changing the route.

Alright, we finally made it to Major League. That means we finally get to use Yoshi. Unfortunately, the speed glitch doesn't work, so we won't be saving as much time from just movement.

1. Are there any odd patterns for speed observed or does riding on Yoshi make you move at a constant speed?
2. How much frames must Yoshi be used for him to be faster than speed glitching?
1. While riding on Yoshi, your speed is constant, just like walking speed is always constant.
2. It depends on the angle and distance we need to traverse. Usually Yoshi is faster.

Since this thread is getting quite long, can any of you mind posting your findings in the Games Resource page? It would be nice to have all the tricks and information in one page rather than spread across the thread. :)

I don't think any other boss has dialogue like that. Thanks for reminding us of that suggestion though, we'll have to remember that for the final chapter.
Speaking of chapters, we've just finished Chapter 3. I just need to quickly go over peril status routing. We'll be encoding shortly.

Remember what Chapter 3 is about again.
(hint: talk battle battle battle battle walk battle battle walk battle battle walk battle win)
(hint 2: battles are easy when you have strategies)
(hint 3: we had strategies)

Well, Chapter 3 could have taken just as long if the luck manipulation was harder.
In general, though. I would have thought Chapter 2 would take several months, for example.
I think I see what you're saying, but it's not as hard as you think to jump across a room (most of what happened in Chapter 2). Most of the time, it's pretty straightforward: find a single joystick angle that gets you to your destination fastest, and jump to it at that one angle (with the Speed Swap glitch). For more complex situations, it just takes a few dozen tests at the most to find the fastest angle to get around each obstacle.
And, of course, we're learning a lot of things as we go, and applying that knowledge to later situations, which saves the time of testing certain things we know to always work a certain way, and thus speeds up the workflow even more.
Oh, and the encode is in progress. It should be up within 24 hours.

Thanks for the encode!
Not much to say about this chapter, it's mostly just fighting and dialogue. The highlight was of course the strategy you used on the boss. Also, I didn't even know you can just escape those "unofficial battles" like the one against Bowser and still progress. You just never try this as a casual player :D
The only question I have is about the condition of the first battle: Is that one fixed and can't be manipulated to be something passive like the other ones?
Overall, you once again did a great job. I can't believe you're 26 minutes ahead of the RTA!

There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.
We didn't learn about that trick until later on, so we weren't able to use it... Until I realized I messed up a couple things and redid most of chapter 3.
Things we fixed:
We did all super hammers without actually hammering
When leveling up I went left once instead of right twice
Better optimization
Skipped the blimp cutscene coming back to rogueport (I don't know how I forgot that, but that helped us save 600+ frames)
Also I somehow messed up on the timing, saying that it was a 55:18 segment even though the video was 56:01, which didn't make any sense. The old time entering Twilight Town was actually 2:19:41 and our new time is 2:19:28. We'll be encoding shortly.

We're currently trying to trigger the Twilight Town mayor from outside his house, but it doesn't seem like we can get it to save time yet.
