Okay, i tried it out myself cuz i was curious.... didn't work properly. Loading the state and keep on killing him (after i got in and out of the room to get the item originally) didn't normally got me the item. Instead, if i were to kill it directly after i loaded the state, i didn't get anything. if i waited for like half a second after the state loaded, and i killed it, i got the item, just like the ~amount of time it needed for me to originally kill the enemy. thus, it would seem like there is a predefined moment where i got the item.... aos's random-sytem is like a mystery to me. perhaps you could try waiting frame by frame and killing the enemy at each next frame to see if you keep on getting the item at a certain frame. that would mean there is some kind of script running, to say if the user gets the item at a kill or not... but that's crazy work. good luck...

There is some randomisation for the souls. When I made my test in alpha6, I was able to get the desired souls fairly easily. I am sure that it is 70% based on timing and 30% based on random tweaks (placement, keypresses, etc). Hard to say, really. I'm trying a lot of different ways to kill each of the Skeleton Knights in the main castle room because I don't want to incorporate too much delay in this. Hopefully I will get the soul soon and move on, and then nitsuja will release some new patch and ruin my efforts. And, on top of that, I have located another drop possibility: the black belt. It would bump up my attack a tiny bit, and it is technically in the way, but I would have to deal with 1 new enemy (so much for precise exp calculations) and avoiding two more. I wonder if the +1ATT +5STR change will really warrant this, but I'm going to do it anyways. Whatever it takes to squeeze out one extra HP per swing on Balore/Chaos. On a final note, I currently have 5200 rerecords with a frame count of 8400. Yay!

Oops, did I just do that, or are you talking about some hypothetical new patch later? Sorry for causing so much trouble for everyone making GBA runs, but I think it's to be expected that an emulator will undergo run-breaking changes before submissions are even being accepted for it. Anyway, carry on...

A hypothetical patch. Don't worry, I would rather that the VBA becomes submittable before I get this movie done.

Good news and bad news at the same time: Dragondarch just pointed out that the Combat Knife is stronger than the Baselard and it is on my route. Somehow my GBA told me that the Baselard was stronger and then changed its mind, so I hadn't caught this. Bad news: I have another thing to randomise and another enemy to kill :/ Good news: Everything after that officer will be faster, I will have a better weapon all the way in to the Arena. Also, I can cut out a slightly slow killing of a Giant Ghost and a Butcher in the Study.

I'm starting this run over. There won't really be any difference aside from that I am moving over to the lag-less VBA for this. As far as I know, the movie played exactly the same up until the first bat encounter. No biggie. I'm going to write down at which frames I do what moves on my existing movie so that I can basically transfer this so a new movie that will be <10 frames faster. Hopefully that will help me with randomising the Skeleton Knight. Neither one was helping me out at all, and I even tried taking a tiny detour to kill the first Zombie Soldier for his Combat Knife, but he wouldn't play along either. Optimally, it is best to get the Skeleton Knight on first pass and then get the Combat Knife from the second Zombie Officer I meet. We'll see how this works out... edit: On top of all of that, I have found another path diversion that is leaving me kind of meh. From there I appear in the Arena, I could make a tiny detour to pick up the Laevatain, which is a nice and burly weapon to use on Balore and Chaos. Problem with this? There are 2 Red Minotaurs and 2 Weretigers in my way. They could equate to another level, which will speed up Balore, but that also makes me want to randomise the Red Minotaur soul so I can tear up Chaos a bit. Doing this, however, removes the need for randomising the Whip Knuckle.

Getting the Laevatain and the Red Minotaur sounds like an excellent thing, and should speed things up a notch i believe. It is far stronger than the Basilard :) Good luck.

Well, I would only have the Baselard until I get the Combat Knife, and that would get ditched for the Whip Knuckle soon after. Laevatain is only 16 ATT stronger than WK, but its worth it. Thing is, RM soul uses 150 MP per cast. I won't be able to use it until CHaos, I think.

Midterms are a distraction. I will be getting this run through Creaking Skull by the end of the week GUARANTEED. If I can't get Skeleton Knight by saturday night (PST), I will give up on Demon's Crest in order to give Aria more attention.

With one midterm out of the way, I decided to get a start on the movie again. I don't know how, but i am currently 111 frames faster than my old movie after having just equipped the Baselard. I don't see how this is, since the old movie played fine without lag reduction and it seemed to be frame specific. Oh well... I should be at the Creaking Skull by tonight, since I did my tests with Gravekeeper.

Here is an update. Just defeated Creaking Skull. Current frame count is 5155 at the final blow to CS, which is good compared to the frame count of 5332 in my last version. Since I am working a Skeleton Officer into my path, I was allowed to skip tossing out a spear at some bats early on. This gave me enough leeway to toss one out in the skeleton corridor, which let me slide at full speed in here. Everything is as optimal as I could make it. Current frame/record ratio: 8.31

Just entered the main castle and passed the first White Dragon. I'm currently 289 frames faster than my old movie. However, I totally forgot to take a shortcut-jump at one point in the ascention of the castle, so I should be able to save maybe 30-40 more frames. Too bad that means I'll have to redo the whole friggin staircase, which is horrid to optimise. I will place the updated movie HERE once the revisions are made.

How can a shortcut-jump only save 30-40 frames? I'm not sure how many seconds that is, but it seems very few for a 'shortcut' :)

Oh, its not really a shortcut, per se. It's just a more efficient path. My mind was elsewhere when I recorded this time around...

Update: Currently 302 frames faster than my old movie upon entering the main castle. So I didn't save that much time, but whatever. Tomorrow is official soul test day.

I have every right to be upset about ONLY 5 seconds. I should be playing this faster for fear that all my work will be obsoleted by someone who finds a way to shave off seconds from my path. Bleh.

Once your get the flying armor and go back all the way to the start of the screen, you jump off the stairs. Wouldn't it be faster to slide off the stairs? I'm not sure if ut's actually faster, but it does look faster.

McBain, no. I would lose my slide speed if I stayed on the stairs.

Hehe, this will be interesting. I've been fooling around with a NG+ speedrun but the god damn emulator f-ed up my recording when I tried to start recording again (after I stopped the movie) Please check the VBA forum for my question, maybe you can help. Thanks
