The experimental encode didn't seem all that much improved over the original encode, though. After going back and forth between the two encodes in fullscreen, I noticed that the experimental encode had very slightly less color bleeding than the original encode, making it look a bit cleaner, but that was all the difference I could tell between the two. :/
That's pretty much exactly what you should be looking for in terms of improved visual quality (for YUV 4:4:4 vs. 4:2:0, at least). I suspect that the difference will be more noticeable for more advanced platforms.

If you are working on improving this run, you should probably cancel this submission - edit it and set the status (at the bottom) to 'decision: cancelled'.

Hi all: I have produced an additional experimental downloadable encode. This encode was created with 10-bit x264 in the YUV444 colour space - only very recent builds of media players or codecs are going to be able to play such an encode back, but the resulting visual quality should be significantly higher for a very similar file size. I would appreciate feedback on who is able to play back this encode successfully and what people think of it relative to the encode I previously posted.

So yes, you're exactly correct.

First time looking at one of the runs of this game. If I didn't know better, I'd think this was a terrible quality, generic high difficulty hack of the original SMB. Do I find it interesting to watch? Not in the slightest. If I want to watch high difficulty SMB-alikes, I'll go watch #3287: HappyLee's FDS Super Mario Bros. 2 in 08:05.28. Is there technical merit to this run? Probably, but I don't think that counterbalances the general lack of entertainment value. I give this a Meh.

I swear I've posted this story at some point previously, but whatever. I'm fairly sure my first exposure to TASing was seeing Morimoto's SMB3 in the wild back when it was first making the rounds, but that may have predated the existence of the site. What first brought my attention to the site was one of the early SM64 runs (quite possibly [794] N64 Super Mario 64 "16 stars" by Rikku in 15:24.08). It took me several months after that to realise there were forums here too.

Already working on the rest of the encodes. EDIT: Downloadable encode. 512kb is streamed up in the submission text (for now).

Are you going to submit that as a separate run, or do you want the submission file here replaced (so that you can un-cancel the run)?

<DarkKobold> I want to set a vibrating controller on my crotch during a TAS, to really feel the frame savings.

Right at the start of 1999, inspired by the just-recently-released Game Boy Color and several back issues of Nintendo Power the family had at the time, I stumbled across NO$GMB - through it, I was introduced to the Wario Land series and Link's Awakening DX. Later, looking to play LADX's immediate predecessor, I discovered Snes9x... which I eventually gave up on, as at the time it didn't emulate some of the graphics of Link to the Past correctly. I came across ZSNES shortly afterwards (this was, by sheer coincidence, mere days before someone in my classes at the time decided it was a good idea to install it on the class computer, resulting in many a fulfilling lunch hour), eventually followed by Nesticle.

You are correct - this is what I get for not looking at the submission page (and just reading the submission text).

I haven't seen this, but I don't buy the version switch on the basis of [movie 936]this movie's description text[/movie] stating that the scoring is different between the two versions, and that movie already provides a faster version of Panel de Pon. If there's an improved technique to be used in the original movie that doesn't resort to the J-specific glitch, use it with the ROM that uses the same scoring system.

Not for the primary encode, but if there's demand for such a thing I'm sure someone will be willing to work on one as a secondary encode (in the spirit of, say, the Sonic Advance camhack encode).

It's been drawn to my attention that the encode that was published for this movie fails to play back properly in VLC, and probably other media players. I apologise if this has inconvenienced anyone and will put someone on getting a new encode ready ASAP.

For the improvement table in the submission text, can someone change the BitS "Frames saved overall" section from 10 to 11? Just a small typo.
Done. I'm impressed with the new BitFS route (it only saved seven frames over the old route? That must have been one intensely fast old route), and this run is actually watchable compared to the last. I vote yes.

In light of Aglar's suggested improvement and SilentSlayers' assertion that the improvement is going to be added, I suggest this be delayed until the improvement is added.

I had the opportunity to watch this slightly in advance. Naturally, the run really picks up upon grabbing the ocarina, at which point the game practically blows up trying to keep up with all the glitching. I particularly enjoyed watching the glitch being used to skip large segments of the game (particularly the normally long and arduous ascent to the Palace of Winds). I vote yes.

Congratulations - you've broken the game even further. I appreciate there being considerably less running around here - the run flows much faster despite only being shorter by ten and a half seconds. Yes vote and well done.

Of course not. Any carefully crafted disguise of that nature will also include a pair of dark sunglasses, after all.

The recent Super Mario All-Stars Lost Levels submission got me thinking as to how [movie 598]the[/movie] [movie 1035]All[/movie]-[movie 1134]Stars[/movie] [movie 1820]runs[/movie] currently published should be named. I am thinking the game name should simply be Super Mario All-Stars, and the branch should be set to the game and any incidentals (e.g. [movie 1035]"SMB3 glitchfest"[/movie] and [movie 1820]"Lost Levels" or perhaps "Lost Levels warpless"[/movie]). Thoughts?
