The game is incredibly easy, one of the easiest games on the NES. i beat it in 15 minutes on my first play of it (in easy mode). Then i made a speedrun in normal mode beating in 12:40 minutes... so it's easy. But i didn't know about the code for very hard mode. Starting with only 1 hp makes the game much more chalenging. I have one question and one complaint: - so the enemies in hard mode don't drop health upgrades? or they do? did you experiment taking damage to be pushed forward? i think the screen moves faster while he's being pushed forward, but then he stops for a while, i'm not sure if it's faster to do this. If not normally, then at least take damage on the places you had to stop. My opinion is that it's uninteresting to see a no damage run in this game, it's too simple, it's better to have this added takes damage to save time element. - there are some minor optimizations, like jumping before falling a ledge on a certain level.. ..........................____ you enter here->__..| ..............................|..| fall on this shaft->.|..| ..............................|..| ..............................|..| ..............................|..|___ ..............................|_____ -> and exit here i don't remember which level was this but it looked like you could have jumped before falling to avoid downwards acceleration. I liked every bit of the boss fights, and good character choice.

I think the mame team is more interested in getting accuracy than features. But on the other hand, there are so many people involved in developing the emulator that i wonder if one of them wouldn't like to see TAS of arcade games...

Yea it kept me wondering, how can it be? start recording a clean new file (say, "movie 2"), and then load a savestate from another movie file (say "movie 1"), and then magically "movie 2" gets all input from "movie 1" prior to the savestate. O_O edit:
Bag of Magic Food wrote:
Yeah, that's done on purpose to implement "bullet-proof recording", where the savestate saves its own timeline so you don't mess it up by going back in time. But couldn't you just copy the files with a command in your file system?
what does it prevent me to do? i don't understand what is this bullet-proof protection preventing me to do.

Neofix can you change the description text? it should have more info. change from this: "Strider" time attack in 7:24 min. by Neofix. PLayed in Hardest level, GENESIS version." to something like this: "Strider" time attack in 7:24 min. by Neofix. PLayed in Hardest level, GENESIS version. This movie was made using an emulator with savestates and slowdown, it's meant to show the game pushed to its limits. For more information on emulator videos, please visit http://tasvideos.org/"

I don't know, i think i would watch one that was made in toe jam & earl perhaps. And it must be played for that purpose, with video edit and everything.

But this has been such a major topic of "proof" that the videos are edits, everyone KNOWS it's impossible that those wrenches wouldn't hurt mario. So maybe it was for the best that that feature is on the video... or not

I'm not sure either, it may come apparent during the making of a TAS

- Are there any tricks for going fast in the airplane or hang glider levels? I assume so because even for the really straightforward ones I always get a terrible score for "time"
I always get perfect time bonus for the airplane and hang glider (except that i rarely land the hang glider correctly). On the airplane i just accelerate max 99 and then i hold the brakes when landing.

Maybe but I'm sticking to a wild bet that the skydiving levels are much faster.

Humm.. i didnt know if reset could be recorded or not, and i don't think there's a soft-reset button sequence...

I think it's pretty clear: He hits the "P" block from below just like you can hit mushrooms and fireflowers, except that the "P" block pushes you up a little, enough to go through the block.

Well snes9x doesnt record this game correctly. Somehow, the rotation of the character is not stored in the savestate (every time i load a savestate at the skydiving mode, the character is reset to horizontal position, no matter what position he was when i saved)

Well guys this is the 120 star run, its definitely fast and the movements i choose to do are optimized, but i don't want to be repetitive and predictable. I hate long repetitive movies. There is the least stars run if you want fastest possible completion.

I think this game deserves a TAS now. I was playing it and i noticed some things that can save time: - obviously not finishing the whole level if you don't have to. get the amount of points you need to barely pass. See which level can be finished quick without wasting a lot of time. Skydiving levels are the fastest, you may to go to bonus stage there so you can crash your plane later after getting through enough rings etc. - sometimes it might be better to get a little more points than needed, to change what the instructor says right after (to a shorter message). - when skydiving, dive head first for speed - RESETING might prove usefull. When you reset and choose continue, the password is already there. I think this can be used to skip some text when you get a new license. All these things i said are based on me watching the game on my super nes, so they are prone to error. Anyone making this will of course want to test it all.

hmm.. this may have been asked before, I didn't read the whole thread, but watched the VIP. you're doing 100 coins + "into the igloo", then "shell shreddin for red coins". the shell seems somewhat out of the way. wouldn't it be faster to go into the igloo, get some coins there, then get the shell, 8 red coins, rest of the 100 (the red-coin's star appears somewhere around where you should pick up coin #100), and then do "into the igloo" seperately?
maybe, but i'm doing it by parts ;) we haven't got there yet hehe
