NES and GG/SMS would also work, as long as you're ok with A=1 and B=2

If, however, the reset button of the NES is not actually a power-cycling button, but instead it just sends the game a signal it can trap (and eg. completely ignore at least in principle), then that changes things.

- NES games are capable of detecting that the game was reset through the reset button[/b] For an instance, Zanac. The game has many cheat codes just like the level selection code: Press 'RESET' button on your NES 13 times then press Start. Use Left and Right on the D-Pad to select the stage. Here's adelikat submission: #1344: adelikat's NES Zanac in 03:26.22. Also there's 2 more cheat codes that makes use of pressing Reset for a various time (9 and 1). One of them: http://tcrf.net/Zanac. By the way this is a very useful webpage for TASers!
If the reset button was akin to just pulling the plug, then turning on Zanac and unplugging the NES 13 times would yield the same effect. I very highly doubt it, but since I don't own an NES to test it myself, but I'm not going to go off on a two page rant based on unfounded assumptions.

In my opinion "playing a game" consists of supplying input to the game which the game reads and interprets. "Playing a game" does not consist of shutting down the console and restarting it (which is what resetting essentially is)
That X-men game for the Genesis would disagree with you there, since it required you to hit the reset button to continue playing a certain level.

I get it, you're kidding. Good joke. Oh wait, you're not kidding? :( Seriously, if the current generation of systems is full of generic/crappy shooters, the 16 bit generation was full of generic/crappy platformers. Innovation which is implemented well is a rare thing, no matter what the technology, and the SNES/Gens was just as full of filler as the PS/xbox is (although I don't think any system will ever match the Wii for poor signal/noise ratio)

Not to go off-topic, but shouldn't there be an xbox (the original) or a psp emulator by now? And could we expect some of the same difficulties with the 3DS as emulator developers have run into with those systems?

Mukki imo. He's done a wide range of platforms, lots of movies, etc, and has definitely been around long enough. DarkKobold is getting up there too... if he had starting making TASes when he first joined, and not in 2007, he'd have close to adelikat :-P

Bug in the sense that VBA doesn't automatically recognize that requirement and switch it accordingly. Or is there no flag in the ROM data to signal which type of SRAM is used?

An ungliched 70 star run, in my viewpoint, is just a lazy run of the ungliched 120 star run, with 50 stars taken out.
Well, yeah. But from my understanding, the 120 star run will use whatever means necessary to get them, whereas a "decreased glitch" 70 star run would look significantly different. However, if you use the goal of "Doesn't glitch through star doors", you're right, the two runs would look nearly identical, minus 50 stars

Ah, cool! Kind of an odd bug, but the workaround is easy enough. Thanks p4wn3r!

Could anyone else check and see if these two ROMs (v1.1) work with their copy of VBA? I've tried the three most recent rerecording versions and the standard non-RR version, without success, however the ROMs play fine on my DS and through NO$GBA on the same laptop.

Any run that forces a viewer to endure DDD can't be considered the greatest category :-P

I tried downloading several of the past versions of VBA onto a new laptop, and whenever I load a ROM (the above are the only ones I have access to ATM), I just get a white screen. I've tried all 4 different rendering options, but nothing changes. The laptop is running vista with all pertinent updates (as far as I know), and I've never had a problem like this on my home laptop. Any ideas why I can't see any graphics? EDIT: Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap works perfectly with all video rendering settings.

I think P.JBoy should get the cash as a thank you for his hard work :) Especially since he did it in the smartest way possible.

I have no problem with rating and/or voting for your own movie. I've done it with all of mine, trying to be as fair as possible with the ratings. If there are very few people to vote or rate, then it's likely an unpopular game and no one will care what you vote. Conversely, if it's a popular game enough people will rate or vote to make the authors single rating/vote inconsequential.

A TAS that doesn't aim for speed? The blasphemy!
TAS = Tool-Assisted Scorerun... didn't you know that? ;)

I feel somewhat sad there aren't that many thinker's games out there (and I don't mean board games and puzzles here obviously), it's almost as if there is no market for them. But, looking at the cult following games like Deus Ex and Torment have, this can't be true, can it?
I don't think that there's a lack of market, it's that it's very difficult to actually write a good plot driven movie with twists, turns, moral decisions, and intricate dialogue. It's the same with movies. For every 'Usual Suspects' there's 50 generic action movies, because it's a lot easier to write big explosions into a script than it is to write believable and convincing dialogue.

I decorated my Christmas tree this year with 4 strands of white lights (non-blinking), several dozen ornaments (almost exclusively comprised of sentimental ornaments from my childhood and the past few years), and a cheap star on top, which really needs to be replaced by something less tacky looking next year. [skims thread] Oh, the title is misleading. It should be "Another thread devolving into religious idiocy". Sorry I went off-topic with what I wrote above.

Here is an example: A game has been frame-warred for a long time and is thought to be very close to perfect. Then, a novice taser discovers a marvelous new strategy for a course of the game. He cannot match the input precision of the previous movie, and the stage he is trying to improve is noticably less precise than the other stages. Still, the new movie is 1 minutes faster than the previous one, with an interesting new path nobody had thought about before. Should this new movie be published? Definitely!
I can see you weren't paying attention to the discussion when JNX submitted his Ocarina of Time run. Have fun reading :) EDIT: Bonus reading from another submission that more matches your point. In general, just because a movie uses a massive new trick (or several) does not necessitate that it be published, if the rest of the movie looks noticeably worse than the published movie.

Going to vote yes for this and for this to get a star, only so that when it hits the front page no one will know how or why it was improved. [/end passive aggressiveness]

Here is the encode we would like the submission page to link to instead of MisterEpic's encode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9zOlNCBYkU This should be the "official" link unless SilentSlayers uploads an encode as well, in which case, we can have 2 links (mine and his).
What's wrong with the current encodes?
