The two main desyncs I ran into where caused by enemies acting differently. first time was the beetles spawning in inconsistent places and the second (the one that ended the TAS) was scarabs not acting the same each time I played the movie back.

"Optimized" isn't the word I would use. Over the years of kind of developed a knack for TASing very well using a controller and frame advance. I know for a fact that frames can be saved here and there with optimized analog input (using the TASinput), but I don't care. This game isn't something I care to ever grind optimization down to the frame with. I just want to make an entertaining video. Edit: Then again, it seems to me that a lot of longer solo-TASes which get accepted on this site are even less optimized than this. Sorry for the call out, but it's true. I'll consider submitting when it's done, probably.

Everything up to Robo-Sandy is tightly routed so why not get a start on things, right? Mermilar and Rock Bottom could still use some work but they won't effect the route for the first 15 (16) spatulas. Link to video Edit: Progress is coming along well, I'm now just over 8 minutes in. And I should be entering the Robo Sandy battle a whole 6.5 minutes faster than the old TAS... You have to keep in mind I'll have 2 less spatulas, but still. This route change is crazy for early game. You can edit posts and just add stuff on instead of double posting, but really I don't think people care either way since I double post a lot of they're very different ideas in each post. That BBB is already known, I've tried to turn it enough to skip the slide entirely and land where the spatula is, I believe it's possible though I haven't done it yet. There really is no reason to do it without fighting King Jellyfish, nor is there anything you can do about the camera. All boss fights with a scripted camera like that will break if you go far enough away. We only re-enable the hand once in this run, and it's at the start of Goo Lagoon. We also disable the hand again upon entering the lighthouse in Downtown. The problem with Sandy's dream is that you need the hand disabled to get the first spatula, and re-enabled for the second, which means you not only have to leave and re-enter the area, but you need to change to Spongebob and take the box. It doesn't flow very nicely. I'm fairly certain that there could be a way to activate the spongeglide with the hand enabled, hopefully I can actually pull it off sometime.

Did you try A/V syncing the video? If the game runs at 30 FPS, Dolphin might be dumping each frame at the shorter 60 FPS length, so each second of video contains two seconds of gameplay. You could fix this with the A/V sync hack (if your Dolphin revision is old enough) or probably by just slowing the video down to 0.5x speed.
Yeah this^ I don't know why I didn't think of this when you mentioned your problem to me... 30FPS games get dumped at 60 for whatever reason, slow the recording down in your video editor. Audio should run at normal speed.

If I had a really slow cruise boost, then maybe. The spatula doesn't show up for a long time and if I'm touching the wall like I am in this video, I'm too far from being able to collect it.

Link to video saves 30-32 seconds, probably more if I optimized movement and clipped back inbounds for the spatula instead. !!! What's that? Two bosses broken in one day? Link to video Sadly these are the only bosses in the game with this kind of trigger to my knowledge, I had someone who know a decent amount about programming in this game look at the bosses and they said it was only these 2 and robot spongebob it could be done on.

It seems to me that the longer the movie, the more often desyncs happen. It seems there's just more that can go wrong the longer it is. Typically movies under 2-3 minutes never desync on me, no matter what. Longer movies tend to start getting slightly varying RNG with things like enemy movement. It got to the point where I could play the movie from the start and sometimes get past certain sections involving enemy movement, and other times not. Using the exact same setting and all each time. I figure the more progress I make, the more places for this to happen and the more often I'll end up needing to redo things slightly differently. It's not something I care to do, I spent probably somewhere around 20 hours optimizing the movement in Chozo and it rarely syncs, I have no motivation to try again until desync issues are unheard of.

1. The hand mainly. There are two checkpoints that can be quickly reached as spongebob at the start of the stage. One gives hardly any speed at all, and the other almost has enough speed to land on the slide, but not quite enough it seems. If I could land on the slide, I could turn and jump to the spatula, solving the problem. I don't know if that's possible though. And if I can't land on the slide, the hand grabs me before I can do anything. 2. BBBs are strange. You only move at absolutely-absurd-speeds in certain states. Falling after a bubble bowl isn't one of those states, you still move pretty fast (depending on the area though). Jumping is one of those states where you move at absolutely-absurd-speeds, which is what I did after falling enough to not go over the wall. Also that backwards slide is easy and fast in general I believe. I actually didn't jump first frame on most of those jumps, if you have cruise boost than nothing matters.

I don't know about that, Kids are MUCH faster with cruise boost, and because menuing takes a matter of frames, it doesn't take long to do them later.

The normal method to disable the hand only works on kill-plane-style hands and timer hands. So the ones where there's a physical trigger that instantly grabs you if you touch it, or ones where spongebob is "stuck" for a certain amount of time and the hand grabs you. Out of bounds sand isn't disabled, and getting grabbed by the hand from out of bounds sand re-enables it everywhere else. The only exception to this is if you do the saving glitch, in which case out of bounds sand is disabled as well. Edit: yay Link to video

That's an interesting idea. It's not on the top of the list of things I want to mess with, since as far as I can imagine, that fight is necessary no matter how it's done, and I'm mostly looking into routing right now. I'll let that idea float around until someone finds time to mess with. I know back in the day, I tried to interrupt a bubble helmet at it's peak with one of Robo Spongebob attacks, and then bubble helmet again out of that to reach the trigger. It didn't go high enough, if I remember correctly. Edit: Mr Krabs' Dream takes 1:22, Goo Lagoon Kids take 0:48, that means to save time over Downtown Spatulas, we just need one more spatula that takes less than 2:33. Buying the 3500 spatula from Mr Krabs takes 1:51. So at the very least, the new DBB route saves 42 seconds. Link to video Edit: Woohoo I finally found a way to do this Link to video Edit: Found this... I don't know what to make of it (requires the boxes activate). Link to video Edit: Box BBBs are absolutely stupid, but if I could manage to get one to work, I could open the box, at the bottom, talk to bubble buddy, get slide slowdown, take the box, and BBB to the trigger ending the race, allowing both spatulas to be quickly collected. Link to video This spatula takes roughly 1:50, making it technically faster than a Mr Krabs spatula by about a second (with room for improvement too). This means the new Downtown route saves 43 seconds at least. Edit: Massive time-save on rooftops, and GL as well. Link to video Link to video I've come up with a base route that puts off GL and DBB until we have bubble bowl, I need to count spatulas to figure out for sure, but I imagine this route should work if I put off DBB until we have cruise bubble as well.

4:43 and 5 spatulas is much better than 9:35 and 8 spatulas. Link to video 4:52 saved over the old route, and 3 less spatulas. Mr Krab's Dream takes 1:22, Goo Lagoon kids probably take around a minute, and maybe we can throw in another sock spatula or find a strat to get Path Through The Goo in FDG? At any rate, I can't imagine not being able to replace these spatulas with faster ones. I also believe skipping Robo Sandy and temporarily delaying Goo Lagoon will save time due to the multitude of BBB/BBBJ's that can be done. I'll time that whenever I get around to messing with this game more, I'm busy the next day or so.

I'm currently working on rerouting the TAS, putting far more effort into it than last time (since I mostly just went with what was fast non-TAS). Apparently Downtown Bikini Bottom takes FAR longer than I had assumed, if anyone's in the mood to look for new strats, Downtown is probably the most dated and in-need. An average spatula collection time of over a minute is really really bad. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PqVemUqqgUeJO0n0IILTVJubJjcQH8hZArBBBRYQZzc/pubhtml By the way, as the title of the doc kind entails, this is timing from my 1:05 TAS, it doesn't have updated strats taken into account, I'll do that later to get an idea of exactly how much time they all save over the 1:05.

I've tried Sandy's dream already, you can get very close to enough speed to theoretically make it, but I can't seem to actually do it :/ Robo Spongebob (both phases) don't give any speed, and Mermelairs Rolling Ball room I remember testing years ago and having no luck. I found a fast thing in the main room of sand mountain though, video soon. Edit: Saves roughly 16 seconds. I never noticed, but we need to come back to this stage later for the last spatula, because the hand is enabled with the two BBBs I found here today. Link to video

That height boost came from sliding on the ice (I think?) normally you can't get height like that at all, but Ice REALLY messes with BBB physics. Still would be neat to look into though.

9 second time saver: Link to video Shout outs to OldSchool for helping me find the method to get grabbed by the hand. This would need to be done once the hand is already re-enabled (so after a different BBB that will be added to the route which uses the sand-hand). And hand would be re-disabled when entering FDG. Edit: BBB in Guppy Mound that saves ~5 seconds over my old TAS, I'm sure it can be done more optimally than this though. Link to video Edit: I know no one thought of this because the idea of re-enabling the kill planes was never a thing, but still, how did we not think of this? Link to video Doesn't take into account travel time to the level, though it doesn't take long at all going from squidwards or patrick's dreams. This is fast (faster than spatulas currently in my TAS from november) and could probably also be tweaked to be non-TAS viable. Edit: not sure why I didn't test this originally Link to video Saves about a second and a half.
