So all the game's TASers have to do is to agree on another rule, like "fastest way to show the credits".
Which would introduce problems if this rule is forced. Because the current order of things is reflected by the freedom the Moons tier gives to movies. The author can decide what he likes better, and as long as it is liked by the viewers, it is all legit. Be it aiming for faster credits or shorter input. Obsoletions are anyway judged by gameplay improvements. And if gameplay is not improved, it is usually rejected. As happens to movie conversions switching the ROM region.

Haven't read the post yet, but it started from IRC discussion between me and Baxter, spawned by my post. I'll clarify my point. Moons runs can have whatever input file length is beter liked by the author and the viewers. Vault runs can only be time records, so sacrificing real time to bring the game to the completion state sooner (say, by skipping the ending cutscenes) is not justified, since the run overall was not liked and is only valuable as a time record. There happened flaws in unrejecting event where games ineligible for Vault got vaulted, but it was a mistake. Current Vault policy: http://tasvideos.org/JudgeGuidelines.html#TiersAndGoals Examples of delayed final battle victories that are a brilliant showcase of the shorter input file concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEPA3aIvdhQ&t=311 http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=zzHWqci-x48&t=398 And where it didn't work: #3313: adelikat's NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 16:26.23

Arbitrary goal. We mostly don't do that here, it usually is aimed for "shortest input that still BRINGS game completion state", not "bringing game completion state as fast as possible", since quite a lot of current tases can be tweaked this way and become a bit longer with no gameplay improvement. Since this movie does not improve gameplay over the already vaulted run, and it is slower, I vote No on all possible questions about this submission. And no, I was not entertained AT ALL :P

Here is a reminder what each member can do on the site: Wiki: Users - what user has what role. Wiki: Roles - explanation of the roles. Wiki: Privileges - listings of abilities per role, and their explanations. If you find some privilege you can't understand, that is not explained on Wiki, or explained poorly, post in this thread, and we will fix the description to make more sense.

Added a slow encode. Will publish as well in a few days (hoping to see more votes).

We also must showcase the tools we use besides rerecording. Lua scripts look very cool for Sonic or Mario jump prediction, hitbox for an invisible sprite, all kinds of HUDs and stuff. FCEUX has a feature where Hex Editor (Memory Viewer) highlights addresses that are changing dynamically. I also could shoot a bit of symbolic debugging.

Making 512kb encode officially downloadable sounds good. Would we be aiming for reducing its size then, since for now I only apply slight compression to it to save on encoding time, as it is only a stream? Also, I'd expect 512kb be played back as well in most cases as 8bit is played.

This is so deadly boring I can't watch it till the end. Which makes me feel I am allowed to vote No for it. Probably good for Vault, but I don't know if it differs anyhow from the real time play.

Reading this thread I realize that we can not stop making 8-bit encodes for now. As for switching from one to another as a primary, I don't see how the either way is better because it would only change the order in the publication module. So, no changes to the current encoding system here to expect in the near future.

Like tasers normally do that, with rerecords displayed in real time. Similarly to Bisqwit's Chrono Cross session. Then when he finally gets into the wall, the rerecording concept is introduced as is, we can tell what we can do with games thanks to rerecording. Dance - clips with dances and whirligig. Draw - fire from Gunstar Heroes, Brain Age, Tetris playaround. Trick - last boss in Chamale's River Sity Ransom kills himself, last ghost in Gimmick several times in a row damages from the same star when the movie is already over. Play our own game - Fire pong from Gunstar Heroes, button display from JXQ's Super Metroid opening. Zip - various Megaman's zips. Glitch - background, gameplay glitches. Something from the glitched Super Metroid, from Rockman & Forte 100CD. ...and just have fun - random mix of everything, including some multitas. Ending: Megaman runs through the glitched world that Wily never managed to save from Megaman.

Publisher is a person who encodes TASes our players produce, creates torrents and screenshots, and publishes the movie on the main site. There are 2 encodes that are required now:
  • Archive.org 480p stream (8-bit 4:2:0 MP4)
  • YouTube HD stream
The first one is uploaded to Archive.org, HD stream is uploaded to TASVideosChannel on YouTube. Screenshots are picked from the lossless dump and then either saved as PNG and optimized, or saved as JPG. If something does not work out right, use our Wiki: LiveChat to solve all kinds of problems (Discord is preferred). Encoder is a person who only makes encodes and has a permission to upload to TASVideosChannel. Those encodes are then used by a publisher. Some encoders then become publishers. Guidelines exist, to help doing everything correctly. If you don't follow all the flow this post mentions while creating publication files, they will most likely be not used for an actual publication. Otherwise everyone is welcome to participate and help us handle the publication job! This thread is locked and kept for announcements only. To discuss its contents, make a quote of the needed post and reply to it in Thread #12461: Ask a question, get an answer!.

Technically I support pressing A. Personally I support what was submitted. Aesthetically I support the cutscene over credits.

If it loses time to existing public WIPs it can be proven to be suboptimal. Unless the losses are considered insignificant :) Someone should help and post the losses per act.

Such cases are not critical for us. I was meaning games that primarily do streams instead of generation/synthesis. Link to video

There just must be some definition which games use chiptune (and need default settings) and which use stream audio (and require higher quality).

This movie is reported to start from Reset, while the previous ones of that branch were starting from a snapshot. As I playback 4017S and then try to replay your submission, it fails to load the movie.

Settings for audio stream are taken once again from http://tasvideos.org/EncodingGuide/HybridEncodeScript.html#Commands where they were put by the senior publisher. I agree with using q2 instead of q0.5 which just killed the sound. As for video, my personal settings are even tighter that the ones at the wiki. I use
--merange 64
instead of 24. BTW, back when natt made that edit, it was a standard to encode with
--me umh --merange 64 --subme 10
which then was changed by me to be
--me tesa --merange 24 --subme 11
because that saves a LOT of size.

Blurry?! Not antialiased, yes. Because it is a bitmap font!
