I chose 1 level because you REALLLLLY don't want to see a full playaround. This happens to be the only level that elmo walks, and thus the only glitch-able one. I'm not sure you want to have me spend 10 minutes collecting R's and whatnot.

Watching this got on my nerves actually. VERY repetitive. I had to vote no.

I'd like to start a new project that would require a large amount of encoding help. I want all obsolete movies to have at least 1 streaming link. For most of these movies either the old AVI is unavailable or substandard anyway so re-encoding them would required or preferred. Also, I would like to have an encode provided for all unpublished (but serious) submissions. The priority would be on submissions rejected due to goals or game choice. In addition, we have a HD project in which we are trying to have a high quality streaming link for all publication (ideally including the obsolete ones). The point of the HD is specifically for nicer looking streaming not for the "official" encode. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcp0e2 Needless to say this is all a tall order and can't be realistically done with our current active encoders so I'm hoping to inspire new encoders (and old encoders). We have resources for encoding: http://tasvideos.org/EncoderGuidelines.html http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/MakingAVI.html In addition I and other publishers would be willing to work with people in helping them learn the ropes. Also, I will have intend to have an encoder forum rank added and I was considering adopting some kind of "encoder points" type system (opinions on this idea are welcome).

These are actually very needed activities that are typically in short supply. So don't downplay their significance. Our seeds are often bone dry, and our submissions and especially wips on the forums are undercommented on. I appreciate the contributions. As far as other things you could do, how about do some editing? We need help documenting what goes on here, both in terms of games and emulators, or even TAS techniques.

I watched Baxter's Tetris run last night and it made me think that perhaps we should allow for more creative, fun runs like these. If the focus is truly enjoyment, that was one of the most amusing things I've seen here in a while!
I just wanted to chime in on this one. His tetris TAS is EXACTLY the kind of things we want submitted; always has and always will. I like impressive tool-assisted gameplay and aiming for a completion time isn't the only means of demonstrating that. I don't want to derail this into an overdone speed vs entertainment debate but I wanted to point out that the TASVideos doors are wide open for creative TASes such as that.

Lol, I thought this was neat. Only thing is that I bet I could find a youtube video of someone solving a rubix cube faster than this TAS was able to show. For a April fool's TAS it was awesome. For a real TAS, it might be pretty good too.

I re-watched it again to be sure before posting but...I didn't see any dinosaurs. Voting NO for failing to color dinosaurs, but keep trying harder! With enough perseverance and intestinal fortitude you will color those dinosaurs yet!

No offense but that was pretty boring. A lot like track & field, which is also boring. Better graphics at least. And the usual farty genesis sound FX.

Wow, I actually think this is more impressive than any of the speed oriented tetris TASes on the site.

Why bother backing up these files? They are a bunch of pointless files of people cheating and claiming it can be done on a console, who cares? If I were a stronger person, I'd delete them from the server right now :/

Sorry for the double post, but I have been thinking. Perhaps this thread should be made public along with an announcement? It might help people help understand how we made this decision.

So this morning I received word about our server contract. We can get out of the server agreement despite having prepaid. However, we are on the hook for the month of April. So if we want we can keep the site up for the next 30 days. I'm thinking that we need to put up an announcement on the main page. Should we keep the site going for those 30 days? Over the weekend I did some soul searching. I pondered if we were crazy for doing this. But every logical chain worked its way here. It has left me quite depressed actually. No TASing and no running the site has left a void in my days. Not sure what I am going to do now. I feel a little angry too, like I've been led astray by a hoax. In 2004 I just wanted to see some asian guy beet SMB3 quickly. Had TASing not happened, I would have found a legit hobby - namely speedruns. Just think had I found a console run instead. What kind of speedrunner could I have been? I wonder how many other people we have ripped away from legit competitive gaming and desensitized them with these hoax movies. I guess I will begin writing a solemn announcement for the front page. I should have it up by tomorrow at the latest.

But is that rain skipping technique faster? Sure it skips the energy refill, but it that is offset by switching weapons twice.

Well, I don't know the exact details on our server agreement. I might be able to get out of it sooner. I'll contact them and exactly how long we are committed.

Is that fact worth the rather large monthly server bill? We have a youtube channel, we could just upload some of Flygon's excellent HD encodings.

It makes sense to remove our speed based movies. However, even if we replace as many of them as possible with some of their more entertainment based predecessors, that is still an 95% cut of the site's content! TASVideos - Tool-assisted Superplays "come watch our 30 playaround movies, they are cool!" Not much of a site is left...but I don't know that we have much choice. Perhaps if we handle the situation well, we can salvage the site, and retain a community.

I agree, speed is silly. I claim to hold a lot of speed records for several games but what's the point? "Hey, Double Dragon 2 can be beaten in 8:40 by cheating". What record does this hold? Nothing. I also could easily cheat to make this 1 second if I chose. Remember the debates about TAS movies recorded with cheat codes? It was quickly decide such a thing is pointless.

What we should be aiming for is to set out that the results you see here are "close enough" to what is possible on the actual console. In light of this, the "good enough" label might not be feasible. A "might not be actually possible" label doesn't really work either - it'll just turn more people to saying that we're "cheating". Having speed be eliminated from the mission statement also isn't acceptable, as it defeats the purpose of many of the runs of the site.
Exactly. The who concept of TASing and TASVideos is founded on the principle of being possible on a real console, not "close enough". Without that foundation we have nothing! I don't see how I can, in good conscious, keep deceiving the public with these false notions. What's the point? I feel like it is all unraveling now. I remember playing blades of steel as a child and watching the demo. I thought it was just built into it different demos. Little did I know I was watching a proof of concept that would destroy the hobby I had cherished for so many years! :-(

So I did some research on Super Mario Bros 2 USA. It turns out that the game doesn't initialize objects before using them. Later on it reuses old values, but the first time it is random. Not good :/

Thanks, I'll try that out sometime soon. Also, a forum thread seems to be a bad way of reporting bugs and even worse for new feature ideas. We have the TODO wiki page, but perhaps we need a better system than either of these, somehow.

The rules written on this site were never intended to be interpreted with the strictness that is being discussed here. If the wording can be taken that strict I apologize and will try to word it in a more flexible manner. However, I want to make a more important point. And that is that a submission must be compared to the movie it obsoletes when judged. Rejecting a new submission is statement of the existing run's superiority. Choosing to keep Guano's run also breaks a site rule (must beat all known records) by losing to an unassisted record. Both movies pose a problem. So which published movie do you want? One that loses to an unassisted speedrun or one that uses the not preferred ROM choice? We went with the latter. Sometimes judging is "icky" business.
