I vote yes in the context of this being an improvement to a published movie. This is more like a revision of air rather than a sequel. The things about the game that were changed contribute to a more publish-worthy TAS (such as the removal of infinite jumps). In addition, this TAS looks faster and more competent (and therefore more impressive) than the published air movie. I agree with mushroom's choice to do some of the harder strategies rather than run on the top of the level. These speed entertainment tradeoffs made for a better TAS.

I consider SMW and its hack SDW to be one of the best for TASing on this site. This is in the quest for fastest time there is literally an infinite amount of possible outcomes. This allows the TASer great artistic freedom to do entertaining things while still getting the fastest time possible. It(they) are almost a perfect marriage of speed & entertainment. Therefore, I consider it a bad game for a playaround. The best playaround are for games where the fastest possible time results in limitied possbilities for the game. The best games then are ones with a lot of entertaing aspects that are unable to be shown in a true speedrun. 5 movies of the SMW/SDW games show a wealth of glitches, trick and possibilities. The SMW 96 run is currently a little outdated but the other 4 show almost every trick shown in this run. In addition, they show a greater master of these tricks and an overall superior technical quality. I look at this run as more of a blueprint/brainstorming for a new 96 exit run. Most of the tricks/glitches can be done without losing time Here are some thoughts I had while watching: Early on = pseudo aiming for time? not so interesting. Up to fortress 1 is actually more boring than what I remember from v1. Holding p block with yoshi = New to me. But probably can be done without losing time in a 96 exit run. At very least, it is just an extension of a concept already done. Fortress 2 - ascending without a cape by the use of wall jumps. Neat but already done in the small only run. Nice coin trick by trapping a turtle shell at around frame 60,000. But this was done in an auto-scroller. Again, this could be done in a fastest time run. Bonus room at around 79000 - excellent. Shows something impressive that couldn't be done if a speedrun. This moment is the biggest argument in favor of a playaround movie. JXQ's post was very informative and I agree with most everything he said as well. There were other nice antics here and there that would cost time in a speedrun. Overall though, I don't think there are enough. Therefore, I am rejecting this run. 1) It fails to show the depth of this game compared to published movies which could be fixed in a v3 perhaps. 2) Bad game for a playaround because most of your arsenal is already done in movies that aim for fastest time.

Not the greatest game, but it kept me entertained enough. It also had some strategy and tactics to work with and wasn't too long. I'll give this a yes.

I'm going to have to choose Vectorman simply because it was a new run, rather than an obsoletion, but even so this barely puts it ahead.
Actually this is technically not true. It was an improvement to a submission which was rejected. And gunstar heroes is the most like a brand new movie. It is very different from the previous movie.

I voted carboard. He has the numbers. He has many difficult to make TASes. He has some high quality work. And he didn't start out by making some easy runs then moving to harder/more popular ones like many of us did as rookies. He bravely jumped into many hard runs and also started out on multiple platforms which I think is impressive. The other guys mentioned have most of these traits too though just slighly less IMO (very slightly). I must say it was a good year for TASing to have that many amazing newcomers. Congrats to all of them.

Wow nice. The published movie is the personal lowest rated published movie. I saw that it was quite sloppy and had a 2p option. But I also thought the game was badly suited for TASing. You have proven otherwise. This movie was entertaining throughout. I love the creative cursor movements. They added so much to the movie. I didn't catch any of the messages you mentioned however :/ Easy yes vote. (Also, if you interested in removing 2004 movies, how about a few famtasia movies >_>)

The published 100 CD run didn't interest me too much but this rocked my face off. Wow.

Yeah, unfortunately my computer experienced a major crash while seeding. Then I went on vacation :( I've fixed my computer (for the moment at least). I am seeding now.

I didn't expect a typical GENS-clunker to be so awesome. There were nicely orchestrated suicides, good boss fights, nice variety in weapons. This game is well suited for TASing. Yes vote.

This thread pisses me off greatly. I do this as a hobby and to help others. If you have a problem with an error I have made, speak to me directly. I don't need public embarrassment where we point out every mistake I have made. If the goal is better quality this isn't it. A thread where we complain about everything that has been done improperly is only going to turn off me or others from doing the work. This is bullshit.

Quite a gem of a game you found here JXQ. It suprises me that after all these years and game with this much TAS potential has went unnoticed. Great game, well played, huge yes vote.

Could be more optimized. But the game itself is very bland. Not bad, but nothing at all noteworthy either. I will have to vote no.

Nice improvements. I like that there some improvements other than the flagpole glitch. Yes vote. Also, mario must have a real headache after 8-4 D:

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/830785528/NinjaGaidenSMS-adelikat-v1.mmv Version 1 complete :) This was just a test run, which was good because I found some interesting things that would have caused me to redo. The fire wheel is very useful in this game and will save time in earlier levels. Though I worry that overuse of it will take away from the entertainment value of the movie. I'd appreciate some thoughts on that issue. Also, I guess I should locate another rom for v2? Mine says UE not prototype so I don't know how that happened.

As was mentioned in the thread, before this was submitted, this run should have aimed for a different goal than fastest completion, because there's already a Kirby's Avalanche run published. Unless you were aiming to obsolete Kirby's Avalanche, in which case you should have played on the hardest difficulty. As it stands, this run doesn't really have any impressive stuff going for it. In fact, I was really bothered by the fact that after the initial combo in each level, you didn't do anything with your playfield. It felt really sloppy and lazy that you just left whatever pile didn't get used in the combo laying around. This movie absolutely gets a "no" vote from me.
ditto to all these points + vote

This was published quickly because: 1) It takes all of 15 minutes to encode rather than the usual hours/days. This is due to the fact that it is short, very little motion, and a good bit of repeated frames for decimation to take out. 2) It is more of just a "touch up" job on the previous movie. Most of it is just a rehash. This is hardly a hard movie to judge 3) I was encoding another smb movie anyway, so I had the scripts ready to go. The End.

I used FCEU .16 but it also syncs with FCEU .12. Haven't tried any of the others.

Technically this is true. However, due to some glitching, luck manipulation, and care moving, I have convinced the game that both my player and the CPU player have the ball! It is actually a death race to the endzone. Had the cpu got to his endzone first it would have been a touchdown. Since I got to my endzone and tackled before then, the game awards me a safety.

The movie doesn't even start to get interesting until about 7-2. And even then, it is rather repetitive. I appreciate the difficulty of those levels though. Problem is that those levels come with the baggage of the first 25 levels. On top of that, we already have a TAS of Adventure Islands. It differentiates from this one in marginal ways. Sorry, but I have to vote no.
