dwangoAC. I was discussing with Micro500 an idea I had for Mario Kart 64. the idea is to do a four player run where I setup a very difficult scenario on Choco Mountain and then hand the controllers over to some human players to see how well they fare. I would move the three boulders so that they are bouncing around on the main course and then lay bananas / shells all over the place. I think it would be a good demonstration of the relationship between TAS and speedrunning. How does that sound?

More importantly, the real N64 has more lag frames than Mupen. Watch one of the console verification videos and compare the time. Of course, if we played back the movie on the Virtual Console version the amount of lag may be closer to that of Mupen.

I tried a bunch of crazy techniques to spin around faster and none were successful, but I did manage to chop quite a bit off the last lap with a more direct line and an AB spin off the last jump: http://www.twitch.tv/weatherton/c/4901260

I'm moving to Star Cup for now. I spent 10 hours on Choco Mountain and really wasn't happy with where I was at, so I needed a change of pace. Here is Wario Stadium: http://www.twitch.tv/weatherton/c/4894985

I'm guessing it was muted due to my playing music while I TAS. I may need to figure out a headphone solution. I'm not too pleased with the new Twitch policies muting sound and deleting past broadcasts after two weeks...

I love how the score for 3-2 wraps to the second line. The game supports the score but also tells you it wasn't expecting it ;)

I was able to change the camera with c^ for the first five races with no desync (I originally played zoomed in but switched to zoomed out when I found out it produces less lag on the real console) . So I think not.

Scepheo, yes Sean Sullivan is the Sully I was referring to. When you say "together with your position" are you referring to X, Y an Z coordinates? Last night I had a strange discovering while trying to manipulate an item while towing another item (meaning I could not hit Z to choose the item). I couldn't change which item I received (it kept being a green shell when I wanted a mushroom) no matter how I changed my control stick input. However, when I changed the frame that I initiated a slide on (i.e. when I jumped) the outcome changed as well. Based on that (granted, it's a single sample) the item seed seemed to depend somewhat on jumping. Not sure what to make of that. I am familiar with the 100 byte lookup tables. I guess what I need is a Lua script that tells me which number I would receive if I hit Z on that frame. How close are you to being able to say that?

antd, yes, Sully (who has posted some on the topic on other parts of these boards) has done some debugging of the game and some specifically related to items. However, I still have no way to predict the items I will get without trying every frame. Having an indicator of which item I would get would save me many many rerecords. If you are willing and able to help, I can dig up some of the details we know so far. P.S. A quick note, I'm just finishing up the second lap of Toad's Turnpike and making good progress on the run now :)

I really enjoyed this and I didn't know about this game. It has so many similarities to Sonic the Hedgehog but it came out within a couple months of the first Sonic game. I find that pretty amazing.

Thanks to Peter Greenwood (micro500) here at TASVideos, I was able to sync the input from two different Weathertenko TAS movie files on my actual N64 console. This is the first time the skip has ever been achieved on console and it verifies that it is technically possible. Now someone just needs to actually do it unassisted :) Link to video

Why not use the Game Boy Player and the GameCube? That or a (harder to find) Wide Boy 64 for the N64.

How has a score attack not been done for this game? It would make headlines due to the popularity of King of Kong and continued popularity of Donkey Kong high score records. Does FinalBurn Alpha not support the game?

But we currently have zero "uses a cheating device" category runs on the site. That's the sensitive issue here and why it should be addressed carefully.

I still don't think a cheat device should be used for anything but the unobtainable parts. It sets a bad precedent. How much of that list is actually need for the run you want to do?

I think you should unlock everything possible without the cheats with a verification movie. Then follow the steps on fzerocentral to get the Japan-exclusive unobtainable parts as a single step and consider that part of the verification movie. The use of action replay should be as minimal as possible; a single step with very clear, well-documented results used to align with the speedrunning community.

That is, in my opinion, the best prize ever for AGDQ. Absolutely amazing! I'm glad to have been able to see it all in person and am jealous of the winner :)

FWIW, this is the first time I can recall ever feeling nauseous from watching any video.

Very impressive but does anyone else find these nauseating to watch? Specifically the constant jittering.

I discovered a faster shortcut on Banshee Boardwalk: Link to video I'm not sure how to capture at a higher resolution in BizHawk than what the movie was created in so, unfortunately this is only 320x240 :(

Thanks Spikestuff. It does appear to be a site bug though that just uploading a .wch file changes to data types...

Just a quick announcement: I will be streaming at http://www.twitch.tv/weatherton today (Saturday) at 2pm EST to demonstrate some interesting findings and tools in the game, if you're interested. The topics I plan to discuss are: 00'00"00 Laps. How can you get them? Mario Kart 64 Item probabilities Course Ghost Behavior (after third lap) Ghost analysis (driving style / efficiency) Xenos slide. How does it work and is it TAS only? Mario Kart 64 Automatic Transmission / Dashboard PAL / NTSC Conversion Demo
