If there is any slowdown due to the frame rate still, it could likely be eliminated by using the Lakitu camera and freezing it in the first area. Obviously, that would not be a very exciting movie to watch but it would be faster...

My guess is that he would have to in order to access World 9 and A-E.
Sorry. Couldn't resist...

Wow, I just really like the interactive transcript on the Youtube encode. I've never seen that before.

I listened to these first on a set of Klipsch computer speakers and then on a Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones. I'm not accustomed to this type of music so it took a lot of listening to even be familiar enough with the song to know what to look for. I tried singling out the highs and listening for breadth and variety in that. To me, there was not much difference, but I did feel that 1 and 2 were more similar than 3 and that the things that made 3 appear different was greater variety in the highs. The difference, if they were even there, were subtle. Quick note: Based on my own listening experience, 192kbps mp3 is "good enough" to avoid extremely noticeable distortions. However, I rip all of my CD's to FLAC to allow for lossless transcoding into whatever lossy format I need. Also, if I ever edit the songs, I know the end result will be just as good as the start. To me, that's the main benefit of lossless audio. Generally, the quality of the sound has a LOT more to do with the speakers / headphones in use than the quality of the audio file. Though bad speakers may make one make bad assessments / decisions about compression quality...

You could present everything in FLAC but have some be made lossy and then convert back.

If it helps at all to know, Kart 64 does the same thing. I think it may consider how far over the line your kart is on the frame you cross.

The checkered wall is perfectly vertical and so cannot (in this game) provide a vertical boost, unfortunately.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy with a few things. I'll try to address all the comments:

For RR, why not just use 3 green shells for all 3 three laps instead of going backwards and getting items again after the first lap? Is that really faster?
It is not possible to get green shells in eighth place, only red shells. I have to use the red shells to be able to get in first and get the green shells.
Spider-Waffle wrote:
And why did you use ghost to get a blue shell, is that the only way to get one when in first, if so can you get other good stuff with a ghost in first or is blue shell it?
You cannot get the blue shell in first place, I use a mistake in the finish line (which exists on three courses, KTB, RRy and YV) to make the game think I am just starting the lap I am about to finish so it thinks I'm in eighth place for one frame. I have to use the ghost to be able to choose an item on that frame.
OmnipotentEntity wrote:
You can get anything with ghost, because it steals from other characters.
This appears to only be the case when you are playing with other human characters. In 1-player the items you can get are still based on what place you are in. See my previous answer for how I got the blue shell here.
OmnipotentEntity wrote:
You can't get anything in 1st place otherwise except green shell, banana, ghost (rare) and mushroom (rare) iirc.
I haven't calculated the exact probabilities, but here is a complete list of items you can get in first (in approximate order of priority): 1. Single green shell 2. Single banana 3. Banana bunch 4. Triple green shells 5. Ghost 6. Single mushroom 7. Single red shell Note: There are two special item boxes in the game that always give you a blue shell (even in first) they are the hot air balloon on Luigi Raceway and the big ramp on KTB.
Spider-Waffle wrote:
On royal raceway can you get anything good to happen with a redshell boost off the zipper, such as making it to the other side without luiki guy?
I'm pretty sure the zipper doesn't affect your interaction with a shell, but I suppose it is worth testing.
Spider-Waffle wrote:
Or if you could use the fake ? to boost up like in coco mountain that'd change everything.
The fake item boost (without a cpu towing it) requires a steep slope to be able to hop up into the item (the item then preserves the vertical velocity for an extended period of time). The only slope under the big ramp is the one going into the water, which has the property of making you tumble immediately.

You can absolutely manipulate where Furrball is. I'm not sure what the factors are, but it's rare to get as bad of luck as you got. I voted "No" because there was nothing in the run that surprised me or looked to be beyond the capabilities of a normal player. It looks slightly unoptimized as well. I wonder if there are any major glitches / tricks to be found. For example, does holding left and right at the same time cause anything interesting to occur?

I do find that comment somewhat amusing coming from the guy who worked for three years on perfecting his Half-Life in "half an hour" run: http://speeddemosarchive.com/HalfLife.html#hardscripts But, I hear you. That's part of the reason I did test runs years back. I have had spurts of significant progress but I was faced with some really bad luck in Kalimari Desert recently that led to me taking some time to mess around with a different character on Luigi Raceway. Previously I had only been able to land early with Yoshi, but I managed to do it with Toad during that session. This may significantly change my luck, so I'm giving that a shot now. Also, I'm now using the reset-record version of Mupen to cut of several otherwise unskipable cut scenes.

So, is there any reason this shouldn't be possible? We have places to BLJ and we know the door can be opened and that you have one frame underwater before you begin swimming. Does the game also check to see if it should open the door in that first frame? If yes, it's just a matter of time...

FYI; If you pay Montana Max his requested ransom at the end, he just laughs, takes your gems and fights you anyway. Also, this game is sloooow moving though I loved it as a kid. Iff this game is of interest to anyone, perhaps doing TMNT Back from the Sewers (also slow moving but fun) would be worthwhile.

I don't think the fact that a run "was groundbreaking" and had "inspired several other runs" is a good reason for a TAS to maintain a star over time. I don't have an opinion in this case, just saying the run should be especially entertaining and should hold up relative to the current day. I would say the fact that several runs have note completed more games at once (whether they were inspired to do so by this one or not) takes down the novelty factor when viewed today.

The movie this is based on is fantastic, it's a Hayao Miyazaki film. I'll take a look now that you've added the youtube link :)

There is also one other theory, but I'm not sure how it would turn out. When you have a lot of BLJ speed while entering water, there is *one* frame where Mario is "walking" underwater. Theoretically if you could touch the door on this one frame, Mario may be able to grab it. The only way this could work is by using the slope on the right side of the castle to "walk" into the moat and touch the door.
Now that sounds promising... do we know whether the game checks to see if it should open the door the first frame possible?

I think the problem with that is that even if you could possibly open the door to the mote from behind, that will not have the same result as opening the door from the outside... you would just end up back in the mote.

Yes vote. I was surprised to see that the improvements were noticeable, which is a testament to how perfected these sections are becoming. I also enjoyed the new camera angles, though they were a bit closer than I'm usually comfortable with, they provided a nice change of pace to really differentiate the run.

But the prize shouldn't be the same, should it? If I had been Christian since childhood, I'd be pretty angry if I was treated the same as a deathbed convert. Because what's the reason? Might as well spend your life in paganism and sin then, and convert when you're 70.
Well, Jesus said the prize would be the same and that you shouldn't be angry about it. In fact, he said you should rejoice for those who were saved from wild living: Parable of the Workers in the Vinyard; Matt 20:1-16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+20%3A1-16&version=NIV The Parable of the Lost Son; Luke 15:11-32 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2015:11-32;&version=NIV; He also saved one of the thieves on the cross; Luke 23:42-43 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2023:42-43&version=NIV So, if you follow Jesus, your attitude is not Christ-like. Edit: I should note that, just because one has salvation through Christ does not mean that they are or will be without sin. Rather, salvation is a gift that allows sinful people (read: everyone) to be viewed as righteous in the eyes of God.

"Newbie" was never such an appropriate ranking on these boards... Seriously man, take a deep breath and describe what you're doing / trying to do and where it is failing. The attitude and terseness are not helping anyone.

Hey all, for anyone who plans to buy and wants a decent discount, Amazon is offering $25 off any 3DS game when you preorder the system: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-Cosmo-Black/dp/B002I096AA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1301146367&sr=8-2 The only bummer is you have to wait for your 3DS system to ship before you get the credit. So I had to cancel my Pilotwings pre-order and will wait until I get the code to order... oh well, it's worth the discount :)
