Kyman, very interesting. Thanks for explaining the stuck glitch. A friend of mine (David Wonn) and I had seen this happen on the Japanese 1.0 version of the game and we were trying to figure out if it was unique to that version. I guess that means it's still a mystery as to why the Japanese 1.0 version of the game does not have the half lap skip work on laps 2 and 3 (any ideas?). As for the All Cups TAS, I'm just now starting KTB. Which will be interesting, because this level does not have a single test TAS completed for it. I plan to get two stars at the first item boxes and then grab another star from the finish line glitch at the end of laps 1 and 2.

Kyman, I had planned to jump off a cpu for the final version, but good idea with super shroom. Did you try comparing this to getting a star and spinning out to jump down? At the very end, it seemed to be a large delay for Lakitu to pick you up... did he ever end up coming? P.S. Other than being incredibly busy (I just finished an engineering Master's degree program while working fulltime and becoming a father), I am still working on Mushroom cup...

I just found my .m64... I actually nearly thought I had lost it somehow. I'm currently encoding the run to upload to Youtube. I did make a mistake that cost time between each race, but I tested and confirmed that the fix can be hex edited in. I just need to take the time to do it. I'll upload the current version just in case I never get motivation to do that ;)

I actually finished the run, and then I realized that I could save time by skipping the celebration on every race. The game is hex friendly, so I have intended to go back and fix it... I may upload what I have though.

2 top players agree on it, you really can’t argue on that
First, thank you for bringing this possible emulation issue to our attention. With regard to whether, and to what extent, there is an issue (with all due respect) we cannot exactly take two top speedrunners' words on the issue. In the spirit of this site, we need to specifically test the circumstances in question and closely compare them. It is possible the issue is more to do with unrestricted control stick movement, for example. Or, maybe the issue is the emulation of the speedometer or something that does not actually affect gameplay. The point is, we don't take peoples' "word for it" on things like this. After all, this is testable.

ALAKTORN, those two Jungle Falls fast laps are not even close to comparable as far as I can tell. The console race is very sloppy looking (bumping into walls and bouncing off the footprints) and, at a minimum, does not use the same strategy / path. I'm not saying the emulation is accurate, but those are not a good comparison example.

ALAKTORN, do you have any documentation / examples showing in which ways the emulation is broken?

Don't you mean first-person perspective? It sounds like a lot of games. Operation Wolf comes to mind.
I did think it was a third-person perspective, I thought you could hide behind things and toss grenades over what you were hiding behind. My memory is pretty fuzzy though. It's possible that it was actually the game you have suggested, but I'm not certain.

I've been trying to remember a game for the NES for years and the only thing I can remember is: 1. The game had military themes 2. Most / all of the game took place in a third-person-shooter perspective, where the player would shoot and launch grenades "into" the screen" 3. I thought the graphics were amazing at the time Any idea what game it could be?!

One major issue needs to be addressed here and thats the fact that the game can be beaten using HSWKs. BLJless run seems a bit arbitary to me.
I think that can be covered with "Does not use acceleration-related glitches" as a goal.
But, "Big Boo's Balcony" would be slower if it were not for the effects of highspeed wallkicking. In fact, would the strat used in this video even be possible without it?

I'm pretty sure this same discussion happened on these boards many years ago. Someone took a rip of the sound file and slowed it down and it was clear that Mario was rolling the "R" on "Bowser" at the end and everything else became very clear as well. Anyone feel like slowing down the clip (perhaps with pitch adjustment)? *EDIT* Okay, I just ripped the audio from the youtube video and used Audacity to adjusted the tempo down by 75%. It's hard to hear over the background sound effects and music. Does anyone know how to rip just the Mario voice track so that we can focus only on that component?

Thank you all for your suggestions. FYI, my wife and I are a bit more into puzzle games that do not have timing elements, so some of these suggestions don't quite fit our style. However, I've got some great leads now, so thanks. I'll try to post here as I find things. P.S. Looks like the Incredible Machine series is available on gog.com.

Twelvepack, thanks for the suggestion. I wish Sierra would bundle a bunch off their older games on Steam or something. Any idea whether that would run on Windows 7?

Post subject: Any Puzzle Games Similar to "Garden Gridlock" in Wii Party?

My wife and I just finished playing through all 30 puzzles on the Wii Party challenge game "Garden Gridlock" and we really enjoyed it. I'm trying to find some other games that are similar so we can keep solving puzzles like this together. Any suggestions? In my search, I came across: "Kwirk", we both really like this type of game as well, but we wish there were something with better visuals and, possibly, cooperative mode (are "Adventures of Lolo" and "Goof Troop" any good?). "Bruiser and Scratch", a Wiiware game that has been "delisted" in my region, so I don't think there is any way for me to get it anymore :( (or, is there?) *EDIT* I found out that the developer released this on PC, for just $5 and updated visuals (plus an "undo") feature. I just bought it! "Puzzle Dimension", a PC game that has a lot of similarities to Garden Gridlock, but it is a bit more interactive. We just downloaded the demo of this and I think we're going to buy it.

Is the wind waker demo in the collector's disc cropped or complete? I tested briefly superswimming to other isles but that's it, would be cool if this was more thoroughly checked to see if parts of the game were cut to make place on the game disc.
Very interesting idea! How cool would it be to beat the demo game? :)

Skelux made a big mistake
If by "big mistake" you mean "absolutely amazing game, that is better than the original in a variety of ways" then, yes. Yes, he did... I think he was a bit more focused on the game mechanics than preventing world skips. Still, good observation about being able to skip the key.

Agreed, I found that code to be very annoying. It didn't allow me to switch to Lakitu view or the close-in Mario view even if I wanted to.

One thing to consider is that Turok 2 was also available on the PC. If slowdown is an issue (I, personally, found it to be) then, perhaps someday the PC version could be TAS'd.

Very interesting post, I really enjoyed reading it and agree with much of it. But I disagree with your conclusion. I fall into each of the categories you describe (at one point or another). However, I do fall squarely into the "just for fun" category with some games at some times. A good example of this is Mario 64. Here is a game that is so intrinsically fun to play for me that I will regularly revisit it just for the joy of playing. Sometimes I do not even try to achieve any particular goals (in-game or otherwise). I think that these sort of gaming sessions are really just "for fun."

I had something very interesting happen, was it known that you can jump from very high and not be injured without using any items? A few weeks ago, I pulled my Turok 3 cartridge out of storage and started playing through the game. I got to the initial part where the pedestrian bridge gets taken out and I didn't quite remember what to do, so I tried to jump the gap. I didn't make, but I survived the fall. Initially, my response was "oh, maybe I'm supposed to go down here" as I couldn't recall. So, I ran down the street and ended up falling off the level into the abyss. After a few seconds of falling, I was placed back at the top of the bridge (on the side I had jumped from). I tried to recreate what had just happened, but to no avail. I wasn't mashing buttons or anything, I'm not really sure what I hit. But I survived that MASSIVE fall. Has this been done before? Could this be useful in the TAS?

I think the movie would have to have a .mkv container to have chapters. Not sure though.
