I was under the impression that once you touch an item box, as it cycles through the different items, the frame that you press Z determines which item you get, and that (except for the glitch in Koopa Troopa Beach) what place you're in determines which items you cycle through (aka no getting Super Shroom in 1st place, highest odds of getting best items when in 8th place, etc.)
This is partially true. Player coordinates and certain control inputs (e.g. control stick position) also influence the item.

Just dropping in for a quick update. I was stuck on the fourth course of the Mushroom Cup (Kalimari Desert) since this April. I played on and off but was beginning to wonder if I'd made a huge error in choosing Yoshi instead of Toad (Yoshi is slightly heavier and I was falling short of a huge jump at the end of the race). Well, last night I decided a different approach to the jump and.... IT WORKED! So, I've completed the Mushroom Cup and am moving on to the Flower Cup. My time is limited, but I am now pretty motivated to continue. Especially since I've finished test races of the remaining 12 courses, so I don't foresee any huge issues.

How can I confirm this? I figure since Mario 64 polls, Kart 64 would too...

So, I've confirmed that I will be attending AGDQ this year with a friend of mine who is running Mario Kart 64 150cc all cups. Is there anything I could do to help with this TAS effort? On a somewhat selfish note, I'd like to know if my Mushroom cup run of Kart 64 syncs on console, seems that could be a fun complement to his run.

I was correct. MTs can be charged MUCH faster on 2P mode than on 1P mode.
That is very cool. And, definitely the mode that should be used for any run submitted to this site. Not to mention the extra shortcut available in GP mode on Bowswer's Castle. Edit: TheFrigz, do you think you could get God +10 on all courses in time trials using TAS? Or are some of them maybe impossible?

Are you using all of the advanced techniques described on this page? http://home.online.nl/tbeuman/mkdd/techs.html#ltech (This is linked to by http://mariokart64.com/mkdd/ )

Oh man, that's some bad game design. I guess doing an optimal TAS would depend heavily on finding the memory address(es) for when each checkpoint is achieved. It seems at least the first level's checkpoints are placed such that it's faster to just complete the level normally. I may optimize the level a bit, not sure if I'll use this warp trick though, it's super weird.

I'm on the 2nd lap of Kalimari Desert. Had to take a break a bit ago since I got stuck on the final jump. I'll try some more tonight. Once I finish this race, the rest shouldn't be nearly as bad. It's strange how the "easiest" cup (mushroom) to play is the hardest to TAS. One thing that would help is if we figured out how to determine what item would be provided for a given frame. But I wasn't able to find this. If someone could find either the memory address or a method of trying each frame without affecting other input, it would make the run easier to develop.

Yeah, same problem here. I think it would help to add a note under normal controls that those are digital mappings.

I'm not sure a full game TAS would be interesting, but I think the first level (Imperial Grand Prix) is a lot of fun to speedrun so I decided to try out BizHawk's new N64 rerecording capability. I was working on setting up BizHawk and was just trying to get my controls configured the way I like them when I serendipitously discovered that this sign has very strange properties. If you get partially stuck in it, it tries to eject you upwards. The game appears to freeze, but it usually ends up throwing you out into the cave. In this case, I managed to get a very helpful warp forward. The freeze took a lot of "real time" but no in-game time, so this seems like it could be useful. Link to video *Edit* I played with this using frame advance a bit and discovered that you cannot press the accelerator, brake or slide buttons or you will lose all of your speed. You can, however, turn (though not very well). I was able to turn enough to make a clean exit in this version. Link to video

As for response, I"m not sure what you mean, but in the controller config you can set the sensitivity of X and Y separately, does this get what you are looking for?
That may be what I'm looking for but I just realized that I'm having a bigger problem. When I map my analog stick on my controller (rather than using the virtual controller), no matter how much I press my control stick I either get a value of 0 or 127. Any idea what's going on here?

I have three questions: 1. After I enable the rewind function, how do I actually rewind? 2. When using the Virtual Pads, is it possible to autofire one of the buttons? This used to be possible in the TAS input plugin by right-clicking. 3. Is it possible to interact with the Virtual Pads using a physical game pad? This was possible on the TAS input plugin. It was also possible to make any one axis behave differently from the other (e.g. make up and down slow to respond while left and right were not).

It's disappointing that a full game no A presses challenge is impossible. (Is the sticking point still the pipe in BitDW?)
Nothing is stopping people from competing for the minimum number of A presses with the fastest time (where a lower number of A presses wins and time is used as a tie breaker). In fact, I thought I saw a rankings like that somewhere.

I've uploaded an encode of my All Courses TAS that removes all of the menus, so it's just all the races one after the other: Link to video

The standard encode completed successfully and I've uploaded it to: Link to video I got errors on all of the other video types. The 10-bit encode failed with a "sox.exe" system error because "zlib1.dll" is missing from my computer. The YouTube HD stream encode failed with a "Runtime error: Could not get file contents."

I will try running it again to see what the error is. It only appeared on the screen briefly.

So, now I have everything running and I encoded the 10-bit primary download. Which went fine, but it didn't come out in HD. So I chose "HD Stream [Youtube.com]". However, that choice always ends with an error and then sends me to https://encoders.tasvideos.org/status.html . Do I need to be an approved encoder to use that Setting? How do I get an HD output?

Ah. That seems to have done the trick. I had installed 2.5.8 from that link since it said it was the last official release.

Feos, I get the following error when I run the global.bat file. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I think this is a very clear example of where the color palettes make a large difference in the entertainment value of the run. It's really hard to distinguish the characters from the background without this. I definitely concur on using this approach.

First, I'm really glad that DKL finally has a full, high quality TAS. I'ts completely unique from the DKC series. Also, very impressive job Tompa, and the final world is especially fun to watch. (Yes vote, by the way). Edit: Why was the encode not done in the Super Game Boy mode?

thanks Feos. I have created a cut of the run with just the races. When I saved the cut, it ballooned to 96GB though (for just a few minutes). I'll try to follow the encoders guide for adding a title, compressing and whatnot.

(also, an encode without all the menus and stuff would so much better; I wish someone provides one.)
What would be the best tool to edit the movie? Normally I would use Adobe Premiere for video editing, but I'm not sure it would support the uncompressed video and odd resolution.
