What is there waiting for it?
It's a wait of around a dozen frames because I get to the room faster this time. When you start falling into the room, there is already an egg headed towards you. Whether you use up+down to get to this room faster or not, you still have to deal with this first egg, there's no getting around it. You can do 1 of 3 things: 1. Wait for the egg to hit the wall, then get the key. (slow) 2. Pick up the key so that the egg passes through you during your pickup animation. 3. Pick up the key and throw it at the egg. If you do 2 or 3, then you still have to wait for Birdo to shoot the 2nd egg. If you try to head straight for the door, you WILL land on Birdo's egg or get hit by it. The jump must be timed so that Birdo shoots his egg to the right 1 frame before you cross over to his left side so the egg's not in the way of the door. It's not apparent in any of the previous runs because up+down isn't used and you arrive at Birdo later, so less waiting. Up+down will not speed up this part of the level.

7:54. 4 seconds longer than estimated. I was expecting up+down to save more time on the last two levels, and on 7-2 it didn't save any time at all since you have to now wait longer at Birdo.

It's taking longer than expected, but I'll submit it before I go to sleep.

Do you have a vid of it?
No. I wasn't recording at the time. Otherwise, I would have sent it in already. I used the bowser castle shortcut of course. My 8-1 is now 289. Also, the mistake in 8-2, I do it on purpose now. You probably save 2 seconds if charge right through them maintaining full speed, then quickly regain the fire in the castle.

I get to Birdo without climbing the vines or blowing up the wall. The run uses 3 bugs that haven't been used in any of the previous runs. It seems that someone has already discovered the up+down climbing trick, but I'm pretty sure the other two have not been used by anyone yet. I took me a whole week to think up these new improvements. I'm also doing the entire run frame by frame so that everything should be fast as possible and to avoid slowdowns. I'll try to have it submitted by tomorrow night.

Sleepz, do you plan on doing a Mega Man speed run?
No, I don't think I'll do that one. However, I did do a sub-11 smb3 run a while ago. We timed it at 11:03, which would make it 10:59 the way SDA times it. So it is possible in a speed run.

I might be finished as early as tommorow. It looks like this thing will be 7:50 or less.

Gigafrost, my smb2 run is almost finished, and it will show you how to do the first world 7.5 seconds faster. I don't want to reveal the strategies used until it's done though. It's a surprise :) . If you are doing the warpless run, you should definitely watch this run first.

And yes, FCM rules.
Yes, frame advance is too good. :) So creating movies for FCM files coverted from FMV files is no problem? I read that FCM has better sound and picture for movies, so I want the finished product to be in this format.

I been converting fcm files to fmv for editing previous levels, but when I convert them back to fcm, the Replay input now shows "Recorded From: Savestate" instead of Reset, "ROM Checksum" shows all 0's and "Current ROM Sum" is now in red text. Will this be a problem when making the avi file? It runs just fine when I play it and it doesn't desync. Also, is FCM the preferred format now? Sorry if this has been gone over before, but I have been out of it for a while. [Edit: Thread title changed by Bisqwit a year later. Original title: "Question about nesmock"]

GG= Guilty Gear. It's like an anime fighting game with high resolution sprites high detailed backgrounds, so it looks even better than SFIII. It has a lot of insane characters, and the gameplay is really good, not just a SF clone. Its sort of like Darkstalkers, except much much better. If you're a fan of anime, then you'll probably love this game.

SSBM is a wicked game, but to me, its not a "real" fighting game. That's just me though. As for SF AC, I'm definitely getting that. I'm gonna buy an Xbox and Xbox LIVE just for that game. Wish they threw Alpha in there too. But the game I'm most looking forward to is GG Isuka. GG series is my favorite 2d fighter, and with 4 player fighting, Isuka's gonna be insane. Am I the only GG fan in here?

Thanks for the insight. I've ruined many good runs screwing up on that part, that's why I take my time for the last block. The other way I used to do it is to just walk off the edge twice, but the odd time you will fall in the lava. I'll try it your way next time. In a month or two, I'm gonna try for a sub-11. I changed my routine a little to depend more on luck, and I can also get 290 on 8-1 now. Plus using the castle shortcut, it might be possible.

Radix is finished making the videos, and I already got to see them. The SMB3 run turns out to be 11:11 by SDA timing ^_^ . They should be up on the site for the next update. As for TG, I confirmed with them that they got my tape about a week ago, but I haven't heard any updates since then. It must take a while to have a run verified I guess. edit: nm, both are verified now.

A friend brought this to my attention. He tells me that he seen posts on Gamefaqs of people claiming and witnessing sub-11 times for this game (I haven't seen any of them, but he tells me there have been a few). Did anyone know about these, and has anyone seen videos or official records? I don't want to jump to any conclusions or anything, but I'm really doubting these claims, since even on the US version which can be finished faster, getting something around Morimoto's time would require a near-flawless performance on every level AND use the Bowser's castle shortcut. Now, I can possibly see someone getting a sub-11 if they pulled this off AS WELL AS avoid all 3 hands, which are completely random (let me know if you can prove otherwise), but it would take at least several attempts. Its not something that you can just do on the spot, whenever you want to show someone. But if these claims are real, and a lot of people really are getting these times, then I'll have to keep trying for a sub-11 too.

I think you should go for LoZ too. You can be the first one to actually use the "Gambling x1" route.

The tape is on its way to Mr.Kelly at TG. I also talked to Radix, and he says he can make the videos for me if I send the tape to him, which Ill probably do today. I was trying a little longer to do a perfect run, but no luck. It takes hours of trying just to get past all the hands, and then every level after that must be done at least semi-perfectly. The 11:15 run has a mess up on 8-2 and a sloppy Bowser's castle cause I was getting nervous, but Radix says the next fastest time is around 12 min, so I think the 11:15 is good. Also on the tape is mm2 in 30:40. I'm guessing its almost humanly impossible for a sub-30 without using glitches. Even though its nowhere near as fast as the emu vid, it's probably much faster than what anyone else can pull off, and its full of high risk maneuvers from start to finish. You should definitely check it out too. Smb was also supposed to be on the tape, but I couldn't get even 5:13. I also read on the TG forum that the WR is now down to 5:12, so I don't think I'll be taking this one any time soon. Right now I'm trying for Zelda 2 since its a side-scroller, and its one of the only nes games I still have, and Ill probably work on Sonic 2 time attack the next free weekend I have. edit: Weren't you and Deviance practicing for LoZ or LttP? It would be cool if you guys submitted some times too.

the best feeling is when you finally finish your legit speedrun. Nothing compares to it. How many tries did it take and how long have you practised for it?
Not long. Most of the time spent practicing was so I can maintain the "P", which is needed to pull off a lot of the stunts from the emulator movies. Getting past the hands took countless tries due to randomness. Times: 1-1: 294 1-2: 291 1-3: 285 1-f: 288 t1: 165 b: 199 a: 238 8-1: 286 8-2: 290 (lose fire power) 8-f: 370 (regain fire power) t2: 210 End: 350

I guess I could do the warpless run, but I don't really want to spend a lot of time practicing all the levels. I want to do other runs too. I'm gonna have the 11:15 run verified by TG first before I send it to SDA. Do you know if SDA will encode the video for me, or will I have to do it myself and send it to them? I also saw the new settings at the TG forums for Punch Out. Deviance should give that a go after he's done with DKC.

I got 11:35 on tape. It's 17 seconds slower than my best time, mainly because I get pulled in by one of the hands. Getting past all 3 seems impossible to do again, so I'll just settle for this run (unless someone can tell me exactly how the hands work and how I can get past them every time) Next up is MM2. btw, thanks for helping me fix my nes Boco. It runs just fine now. ^o^

This is not true. The trick has nothing to do with pressing up+down or left+right at the same. To do the trick, you have to press UP (or possibly DOWN would work too) to grab the ladder when you are above the level you would normally be able to start standing at. The game will place you high above the ladder, and if a ceiling happens to be there and you're facing left, you'll zoom to the right. The important piece of this trick to work is your position: If you are not high enough, you'll just grab the ladder and climb up. You have to be high enough so that climbing would no longer work.
Give it a try and you'll see what I'm talking about. I've done the trick by over-jumping the ladder with item-3 also, but if you're using famtasia, its much easier to just hold up+down. When you hold the two, Mega Man will climb the ladder and automatically do the trick once he reaches the top.

Sleepz told me to die? I dunno. A definite way of getting in anyhow would be nice.
You don't have to die. There are other ways to do that trick without dying, but I find it easier to get killed and spawn in the beginning of the Wily level.

How does that bubbleman ceiling warp thing work? Watch the video. Just keep pausing until you make it far enough to the right, and when the screen starts scrolling, hold left. Mega Man should be stuck in the wall. Now just release left and Mega Man will start zooming to the right. How do you do the ladder trick Morimoto does in MM2 with Item-3? If you're talking about the trick where he quickly zooms to the right, that's done by holding up+down on the controller. To pull this off though, you would need to use a keyboard or mess with your controller pad. You don't need item-3 to do it. Just hold both the up and down directions and once Mega Man reaches the top of the ladder, he will go flying to the right. You can also go through walls with this trick. The two other games that I know have this is AoL and Tiny Toon, where holding opposite directions at the same time will move you around extremely fast. Edit: I forgot one thing. The condition for this trick to work is that there must be some kind of roof above the ladder, and that Mega Man has to touch it when he jumps off the top of the ladder. If there's no roof above the ladder when you do this trick, Mega Man will just be jumping around like an idiot. What is the "wily Warp" I hear about? How can you do it? Its a trick that takes you to a Wily level from one of the 8 robot levels. The levels are messed up and there's no boss at the end of them. There are a few ways to do it. The easiest way is to use item-1 at the boss doors under the Wily signs, then let the wall trick zoom you through the door. If you did it right, it should look like you are in a different level, overlapping the current one. Now go to the boss and let him kill you. When you gain control again, you should be in the corresponding Wily level. Hope that makes sense. Here are the "warps": Heatman - Wily 1 Airman - Wily 2 Woodman - Wily 3 Bubbleman - Wily 4 Quickman - Wily 5 Clashman - Wily 6 Flashman - none Metalman - none
