as I said in the previous submission, I dont think this category feels any different to the published movie other than the fact that IGT is shorter but real time is longer. I'm voting no for entertainment.
I agree. This is basically in-game time vs real time, and as far as I can tell we haven't had separate branches for those since the IGT and RT branches for Metroid 2 got merged.

I've just noticed that we have this run for the C64, A2600, and Arcade... the description for the C64 run links to the other two, but the other two do not, and clicking the "related games" doesn't reveal them either. Could someone crosslink please?

No vote, board games aren't eligible for the vault.

Can you skip the Shadowlord fight on every version of this game, or is this NES exclusive?
It's an oversight. In other versions, if you enter DOOM while the shadowlords are still around, they take back their scepter and then attack you. Also, this port is horrible. I'd like to see a run on the DOS version instead. Funnily, the NES port of Ultima five was made so long after the original that it uses (color-reduced) graphics from Ultima six...

Well that's a childhood classic :) I'm curious though, of all the various ports (and the arcade original) that exist of this game, why pick the C64 one?

[2529] Windows Hyper Princess Pitch "Reallyjoel's Mom difficulty, best ending" by Tseralith in 15:40.48, which takes a secret difficulty mode intended by the author to be completely impossible, and beats it anyway. It has a ludicrous amount of enemies (and bullets) on-screen, solid ratings for star tier, and probably the highest kill-count-per-second of any TAS. [2636] NES Super Mario Bros., 2, The Lost Levels & 3 by agwawaf in 08:49.78, because controlling four games at the same time is a great example of how far beyond ordinary gameplay TAS'es can get, and would make even people who never heard of TAS'ing do a second take. It doesn't get much TAS'ier than that. [1917] Windows Cave Story "best ending" by nitsuja in 50:10.30, as the author created the TAS'ing platform Hourglass just to make this movie; and it's also and utterly destroys the game by juggling multiple weapons at the same time, takes hard bosses down in half a second, and makes it look stylish. [2825] DOOM The Ultimate Doom "Episode 2" by Akse in 03:22.01, since DOOM is the community where TAS'ing first originated back in 1999, and that deserves recognition. This is our first, and highest-rated, DOOM run; it breaks records that have been thoroughly analyzed and optimized for two decades; and makes an art out of manipulating big crowds of enemies. [3358] GBC Pokémon: Yellow Version "arbitrary code execution" by MrWint in 05:48.28, a work of art that even by ACE standards looks utterly impossible; "how does he DOOOOO this?"

Nice chiptune. The time limit looks pretty harsh in non-TAS conditions, you clear the last level with only 13 seconds on the clock? What's with the screen after the boss that you killed the wrong monster? Also: yes vote.

This is a common mechanic in platformers, introduced whenever the game designer wants jumping to have more lenient windows, and it's called 'coyote time'.
This doesn't look like coyote time. Judged by the last GIF, you can 'air jump' at any time between walking off the platform and hitting the floor. Coyote time would allow a jump only for a few frames after walking off.

This game is one of the most visually impressive ROM hacks for the SNES and should be seen by more people.
The art is certainly decent but I wouldn't call it impressive; what I find impressive is that it's not a ROMhack: somebody actually coded this, from scratch, in friggin' assembly. For the encode, please consider this patch to disable Mario's annoying jumping sound,
ROM Patch: If you want to make it a ROM patch, you just open the ROM in a hex editor and go to offset 0x1E75 and replace the 3 bytes 20 CC 1E with EA EA EA (then repair the checksum with a tool if you feel like it).

I was searching and think with this thread I found an at least somewhat suitable already existing thread for what I wanted to point out in relation to the yearly awards, which would be a suggestion and a generalized concern related to it.
What you're essentially proposing is that a committee decides a shortlist, and people can vote off that. Write-ins are allowed, but let's face it, the shortlist is going to have much better chances at winning. I don't see that as fair, nor do I think that one incident is grounds for this radical change to the voting process.

Nice glitch, but I find the resulting run not very entertaining. Since the glitch can be duplicated without tool assistance, I wonder how much this run stands out from an unassisted run. It doesn't really feel like a superplay to me, more like playing with godmode.

Does this movie clear every event? If it does not, maybe it should?
There's a whole series of sports titles with various sub-games for different events; such as this one, the Summer/Winter Games series, Skate Or Die, and so forth. It strikes me that these can be "completed" in four different ways, some of which are noteworthy and some are not. I'll use a downhill skiing event as an example, but it really applies to others as well. (1) Stop the game as quickly as possible. In terms of skiing, that means crashing into the nearest tree. (2) Reach the end as quickly as possible. For skiing, go downhill as fast as possible, to reach the finish line. (3) Get the highest score. For skiing, you might score 100 points for each slalom flag you cross. (4) Get a better score than your competitors. Often, these games have computer-controlled opponents, and you get a gold medal (or equivalent) by doing better than them. #1 clearly doesn't look like a superplay. #4 bothers me because quite often, computer controller opponents play really badly; so doing better than that doesn't particularly prove anything. #2 is potentially boring but could be vault-worthy as an "any%" run. #3 has the problem that it may not be possible to prove that your score is indeed the best. But has this ever stopped us before? Certain metroidvanias have a percentage counter so a "100% run" would be acceptable... until somebody figures out a way to score 101% or 105% or 114% and then that becomes the goal. This would also apply to sport games; do your due diligence to make plausible that your score is indeed the maximum, and it's possible that your run gets obsoleted by a higher score. This has the advantage that if any sub-game has a fixed length (e.g. "figure skate for three minutes") then aiming for a high score would look more interesting and more like a superplay than just idling for 180 seconds. $.02

Sure, but the movie rules allow you (in fact, encourage you) to use a higher difficulty level even if it's slower. Higher difficulties are usually slower but may lead to more entertaining runs.

If I understand correctly, there is no new content after stage 29. So wouldn't that be a suitable endpoint for the TAS, per our movie rules?

Honestly I really dislike the very concept of a technical rating to begin with.
Yes, and you'll probably find an near-linear correlation between technical and entertainment ratings anyway, because that's how people tend to vote if two axes are required (particularly if people don't fully understand the axes). This graph is a good example, Anyway, I get the impression that most people agree technical rating should be deprecated, but the site currently lacks a technical (heh) person to implement that change. So there's not much point in talking about it, until the mods and/or admins want to publically recruit a PHP coder to alter the forum. That shouldn't be hard to find, mind you...

This is part of why I want to know why people don't rate TASes. If people's problems with the rating system stem with execution, we could potentially fix that. If the problem is the whole concept of rating to begin with, then I don't think we should rely on it for these systems.
People love ratings. People will rate anything. The whole internet runs on ratings. Now here's how I rate something on my local food delivery site:
  • Click on one of five stars
And here's how I rate something on TASvideos:
  • Log in to the video part of the site, which is different from logging into the forums.
  • Click on 'rate this movie'
  • Figure out the difference between "entertainment quality" and "technical quality"
  • Click on the first pulldown
  • Click on a number
  • Click on the second pulldown
  • Click on a number
  • Click on the third pulldown
  • Click on a number
  • Click on the fourth pulldown
  • Click on a number
  • Click on send data
  • Close the extra tab that popped up with my results
...see a difference here? THIS is what's keeping people from rating. It's too many clicks, and there's no reason to have fractional rates, and people have to make up their own distinction between entertainment and technical.[/list]

This should be tagged "easiest difficulty" since you're jousting against Pete instead of Lester. And since you're luck-manipulating, I wonder if Lester can't be manipulated in the same way?
