Interesting stuff, to be certain! However, the methods used in the Atari 2600 experiments are far more complex than would be necessary for making a TAS. The computers used in the experiment played the games directly from video input, with no access to the emulator state. A computer with access to the emulator state (e.g. LuaBot) can discover solutions much more quickly and with less processing power.

So the arcade version should be TASed and not this bootleg.
Of course the arcade version should be TASed! Unfortunately, Final Burn Alpha does not support Donkey Kong, and MAME TASes are not accepted at TASVideos.org just yet. Too bad. MAME supports 4 official sets of Donkey Kong, plus 3 hacks. The closest thing Final Burn Alpha supports is a bootleg version of Donkey Kong Junior on Moon Cresta hardware with incorrect colors. Yeesh. :/

From what I was told, MAME is basically "own core for each set of hardware" and neither of them was designed with rerecording in mind. So you add rerecording to games, like in hourglass, not to the whole platform.
Thankfully, it would not be *quite* as tedious as adding per-game support for rerecording. It's true that each master hardware set has its own core, but many master hardware sets support multiple games. For example, the core for Capcom CPS-1 hardware supports 35 original games, including Strider and the Street Fighter II series. SNK Neo MVS hardware supports 171 original games, including Magician Lord and the Metal Slug series.

Yeah, those are what mz (and co.) did. I don't know anything about how stable it is, but if £e Nécroyeur can make a TAS with it, then we have what to talk about! :)
Well! I'm glad this did not require its own Discussion thread. I only wanted to feel that my efforts would not be entirely in vain before I attempted in earnest to TAS on MAME. I would be happy to give you something to talk about! After I finish my current TAS itinerary, of course... :)

There's always Final Burn Alpha which is an accepted Arcade emulator, but I do not know if Joust will work. Thanks for the interest, though!
Yes, I know Final Burn Alpha all too well. But while Final Burn Alpha supports 2,686 original games, MAME supports 6,283 original games. To summarize, Final Burn Alpha does not support Joust. MAME does support Joust. And Joust 2: Survival of the Fittest. And every other Williams classic. :)

When's Arcade Joust?
As much as I would love to see (or TAS) this, MAME videos are not accepted here. Please change this policy! :)

Not to put too fine a point on it, feos, but since you are so fond of quoting The Law:
Encoder Guidelines wrote:
The video content must label the player by name and the TASVideos website as the source.
I think this is pretty straightforward. Give proper credit. Label the player by name. Not by some equivalent approximation of the player's name, but the player's name. So pretty please, with sugar on top, replace the encode with a corrected version, tovarishch. :)

My apologies, feos, but I do not remember reading that portion of the Submission Instructions when I created my account. And thank you, Spikestuff, for your comment. I did indeed confirm that each of the previous publications for my TASes consistently used the correct spelling before requesting a correction. I recognize that the nickname can be problematic at times, but I have been using it since the 90's. When people were doing that kind of thing. <cough!> The name is quite handy for searching, however. Or should be. At NicoVideo.jp, for example, I need only search for "£ TAS" to find all of my videos. I recently discovered that someone had posted one of the Magician Lord TASes to NicoVideo.jp, but I did not realize it for several days because the User who posted the video credited the author simply as"Necroyeur". I sent him a Private Message as well. Interestingly, the NicoVideo User that uploaded my Cobra Command TAS used the correct nickname in the description, despite the remainder of the description being in Japanese. I provided you with all of the information I have regarding the special characters in the nickname. I appreciate your prompt response to this matter, feos. :)

For those watching the YouTube Encode, please note that the caption at the 16 mark states Played by ?e Necroyeur This is not correct. My nickname is £e Nécroyeur I have sent a message to feos regarding this, and hopefully this Encode will soon be replaced with a corrected version.

Thank you all for commenting, voting and rating! I'm happy to see the more popular edit of this TAS given prominence on the site. Let's just hope I don't find another game with an option to end input early... Now I can get back to work on [Undisclosed TAS]!

Alternate versions, right! It's important, of course, to avoid meaningless publications. But this isn't *entirely* meaningless (and certainly not to me). And frankly, if an alternate version is not allowed on the front page, it seems likely that it will still end up being published in Gruefood Delight or Obsoletely Fabulous. Published. I am conflicted in making a TAS just as others are conflicted in judging it. We are all bound by the rules and guidelines of TASVideos.org, and I do my best to adhere to them, but there is some duality even to the rules. I feel like "complete the game as quickly as possible" and "make the game as entertaining as possible" are both Rule #1. A quandary arises when it is impossible for a TAS to meet both conditions. Hyperbole aside, I'm not making 100 Submissions of the same game with slightly tweaked endings. I made 2 Submissions of this game, both of which were received favorably, and the 2nd of which was authored purely based on viewer feedback. I don't feel that this is any kind of abuse of TASVideos.org or its users.

I certainly wouldn't want to put myself in a position to have my TAS Obsoleted... I think the order of the Submissions was prudent. :)

Aqfaq is both wise and just. Except instead of changing the existing publication to Vault tier, the new submission should be placed in the Stars tier. <cough!>

Indeed. Let the debate begin! :) I would point out that all but 1 of my submissions have ended input early, but nobody really noticed (or cared) that the Final Boss suicides itself against Iron Tank at the end... Saved me like, 5 Frames!

For those watching the YouTube module, please note that the input at about the 918 mark, where Elta can be seen to push against the right edge of the screen, is not part of my submitted input file. This input was added inadvertently between submission and publication. I have sent a message to Guga regarding this, and hopefully this video will soon be replaced with the original interpretation.

I meant no disrespect, Warepire. When I posted that, I didn't even realize that you had posted about your Vote. I was just being facetious, as in, "Somebody's always gotta say 'no'". Every Member is entitled to a Vote, or to not Vote. I appreciate that you would also post your comments.
