My understanding is that when Kouichi Yotsui left Capcom to join Mitchell, he brought members of Strider's programming staff with him. Mitchell could not use the Strider name or likeness, but the physics engine that the programming staff brought with them remained, and Osman was the result.

Thanks for this, RobynS! Glad to see there is enduring love for this game. I agree with AKheon about the music. Fans of the NES version may recognize certain music tracks from this version.

This TAS will sync in both MAME-RR v0.144 and v0.139 (the input file indicates v0.139 as its source).

Thank you for the suggestion! Some time could indeed be saved if a 2nd Player enters the game while it is in progress as you have indicated. However, this sort of exploit is almost certainly unacceptable practice. As an extreme example, the game could be played through with 1 Player (which would be faster), and then a 2nd Player could enter the game just before the final boss is destroyed. I can't imagine that completing the game in such a manner could be considered a "2 Player" run. Perhaps a Judge could elaborate on exactly what sort of rule this violates, or what constitutes an acceptable "2 Player" run.

I used a cheat file as I recommended previously to test the addresses that the RAM Search provided. In the case of address 00FFC04E, when the cheat was enabled, the Hero could walk to the right across the screen, but when he reached the edge of the screen, he would reappear at the left edge of the screen. This indicates that it is the Hero's X major location.

Thank you for this! It's exciting to see a MAME-RR TAS here. If MAME-RR movies are ever to be accepted at TASVideos, this example is an important step. Nice game choice also. :)

You have good taste. As creaothceann mentioned, you can set an address to a fixed value to test it. Make a cheat file named SHINOBI.INI in /SUPPORT/CHEATS and enter something to this effect cheat "Hero X Minor Location" default 0 0 "Disabled" 1 "Enabled", 0, 0x00FFC04F, 0x00 Enter all the addresses you want to test, load Final Burn Alpha, and then enable cheats one at a time (Misc-Enable cheats in the menu). A few addresses Hero X Minor Location 00FFC04F Hero X Major Location 00FFC04E Screen X Minor Location 00FFF081 Screen X Major Location 00FFF080

(The associated video has been deleted.) This TAS completes Round 1: Segment 1 of Final Fight in 121 fewer Frames than [2905] Arcade Final Fight "2 players" by CReTiNo in 15:45.40. This TAS plays at the maximum Difficulty Level settings (8 out of 8 Difficulty Level 1 and 4 out of 4 Difficulty Level 2). The current Publication plays at the default Difficulty Level settings (4 out of 4 Difficulty Level 1 and 2 out of 2 Difficulty Level 2), because as I understand it, the author was unaware that the DIP switches could be adjusted. This TAS demonstrates that at least this Segment of the game can be completed in fewer Frames than the current Publication, despite being played at the maximum Difficulty Level settings. I would like to complete a TAS of this game, and this leads to my quandary and why I have posted here: At the maximum Difficulty Level settings, the Heroes to less damage against Mini Bosses and Bosses than they do at the default Difficulty Level settings. The Difficulty Level DIP Switches do not modify the amount of damage that a Hero inflicts against normal enemies. As such, a Segment with a Boss Battle would require rather more Frames at the maximum Difficulty Level settings that the same Segment at the default Difficulty Level settings. As a result, the TAS overall would likely require more Frames at the maximum Difficulty than the current Publication, despite the majority of Segments being completed in fewer Frames than the current Publication. I would prefer a TAS of this game played at the maximum Difficulty Level settings, and my impression is that this would be more closely in line with TASVideos Guidelines. However, would a Submission that requires more Frames to complete the game because it is played at the maximum Difficulty be rejected for being slower than the current Publication? At the minimum Difficulty Level settings, the Heroes to more damage against Mini Bosses and Bosses than they do at the default Difficulty Level settings. Using these settings would allow the game to be completed in the fewest number of Frames. However, I feel it is less impressive. The seething throngs of enemies of enemies that are possible at higher Difficulty Level settings are one of the charms (horrors?) of arcade Beat 'Em Up games of this era. Would a Submission that requires fewer Frames to complete the game because it is played at the minimum Difficulty be rejected for playing at lower Difficulty Level settings than the current Publication? Playing at the default Difficulty Level settings would complete the game in fewer Frames than the current Publication, but not so few as would playing at the minimum Difficulty Level settings. This choice would seem arbitrary to me, and only an issue because the precedent has been set at these Difficulty Level settings. I would appreciate any feedback on how to proceed. I don't really wanna have to TAS this twice. :)

I think this could be a good idea. Along the same line of thought, might I recommend a thread for Gruefood/Vault Tier changes? With a GrueDude to complete the triumvirate. I nominate #1493: Bisqwit's DOS Star Control II in 35:03.50.
