I'm glad that you looked into this a bit further.
I surmise that you are using FBA-RR. "Add Cheat" does not function. "Enable cheats" is locked when an FBM file is created or loaded. It remains locked until the game is reloaded in the emulator with no FBM file active.
I didn't have to guess. It was drawn from Pugsy's legendary MAME cheat database. :)
Haunted Castle RNG memory address:
000018E1
While Pugsy's database is voluminous, it will not provide every memory address required for a TAS. For example, the RNG. Some searching will always be necessary.
You might consider using MAME-RR rather than FBA-RR for Haunted Castle. The emulation is more accurate, the cheat engine is more sophisticated, and cheats can be enabled while recording.

I missed this!
The original version was designed for the Atari 8-bit series of computers.
Boulder Dash was adapted for arcade use in Exidy's Max-A-Flex cabinet. This version is essentially unchanged. The Max-A-Flex cabinet is built around an Atari 600XL. MAME-RR supports the Max-A-Flex series of games.

Level select cheats can be tricky. Even if you know the memory address, it is not always obvious which value to use, or when and how to manipulate the value.
I don't know that I can help you to search, but here is an example for you to experiment with
Haunted Castle Stage memory address
00000806

Using Free Play saves 1 Frame compared to inserting a coin.
In most cases, the state of DIP switches is written to the MAR file when a MAR file is created. When the MAR file is played back, the DIP switch state indicated by the MAR file overrides the emulator's current DIP switch state.

Thank you for your post, Ready Steady Yeti. I had indicated goal information for each Event in the submission text...but only through Javelin Throw. I have edited the submission text to include the goal for each Event.

I highly recommend using the U.S. Gold version of this game. It is a much more faithful adaptation, with improved graphics and sound, and it features all 4 stages of the original!
